Special teams success was the key for Liberty, which scored three power-play goals and one shorthanded, killing off all five of its penalties.
The Lady Flames swept their first three ACHA series against Utah, Rhode Island, and Lindenwood (Mo.) University without allowing a goal and remained unscored upon in league play, with senior goalie and alternate captain Alex Keith posting her fifth shutout in as many starts this season.
"To shut Adrian out is a big thing," Liberty Head Coach Chris Lowes said. "We're excited. It was a good day. We gave up a bunch of offensive opportunities in the first period, when Keith had to be her best. She played a really good first period, made some good saves, and we settled down a little bit."
Liberty led 1-0 after the first period when graduate forward and alternate captain Zosia Adamek scored on a beautiful shot off the rush with the Lady Flames on a power play.
Graduate defenseman Allison Shaw added a power-play goal in the second period off a drive into the slot before graduate forward and head captain Brielle Fussy added a shorthanded score to end the period with Liberty leading 3-0.
Junior defenseman Sophia Adamek netted the Lady Flames' final goal in the third period on another power-play score on the fast break, capitalizing on the last of the Bulldogs' seven penalties.
"Special teams played a big part," Lowes said. "We scored three goals on power plays and one shorthanded. Defensively, after we went penalty-free the last two games (against the Lady Lions), we killed off all five of our penalties tonight."
Liberty and Adrian will square off again on Saturday with the puck dropping at 3 p.m.
"It is really important for us to get some rest on a quick turnaround and be ready to complete the sweep tomorrow," Lowes said.
He said he isn't concerned about the Lady Flames' ranking as long as they keep winning.
"It's a computer ranking, with a lot of it based on strength of schedule," Lowes said. "It usually takes six weeks to shake things out. As long as we keep taking care of business, we'll be right where we want to be (at the end of the season)."
