Lady Flames eager to host second Midnight Mayhem matchup with No. 4 Saints

A College For A Weekend crowd will help give No. 2 Liberty a decided home-ice advantage in the rematch of last season’s ACHA Division I Championship final.
The No. 2-ranked Lady Flames' opponent will be the same, with Women's Midwest College Hockey rival Maryville (Mo.) University, ranked No. 4, in town for Liberty's second College for A Weekend (CFAW) of the fall semester.
Last season, the Lady Flames won four out of five meetings with the Saints, with the first settled in overtime in the Nov. 1 Midnight Mayhem matchup at the LIC and the last in double overtime in the national championship final near St. Louis, clinching Liberty's seventh ACHA DI national title.
That final game was played in front of a partisan Maryville crowd, with its campus in Chesterfield, Mo., just 20 minutes from the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Mo. This time, the seven-time national champion Lady Flames, who are off to a 14-0 start with eight shutouts in 10 ACHA games, will have a significant home-ice advantage.
"We have a growing rivalry (with Maryville). At nationals and when we played them during the regular season, they had a loud home crowd," said Liberty Head Coach Chris Lowes, noting the Lady Flames' one loss against the Saints last season came in front of Maryville's fans. "We'll be excited for the energy and the home crowd (early Sunday morning)."
The teams will meet in a rematch later that day, with the puck dropping at 4:30 p.m. back in the LIC. All tickets for the Midnight Mayhem matchup are $4. Fans attending Sunday afternoon's rematch will get in for free, as usual.
Every team ranked in the top five in this week's ACHA Division I national poll is a member of the WMCH. Liberty has won five of the six WMCH tournament crowns since joining the new conference in 2020. Besides the Flames and Saints, Midland (Neb.) University is currently ranked No. 1, with McKendree (Ill.) University at No. 3, and Minot (N.D.) University at No. 5.
"We are still No. 2, but we certainly plan to get to No. 1," Lowes said. "(Maryville is) arguably more battle-tested than we are. They've played Midland and Minot, and they are certainly one of the heavyweights (in the ACHA) this year."
Liberty holds an 11-1 record against the Saints since first sweeping them in a series in the LIC Nov. 18-19, 2022.
"It's going to be a good match for us," Lowes said. "We haven't played anyone in the top five yet this year, so it will be good to have them push us. We're excited. Hopefully, it will be a good litmus test for us that will expose our weaknesses and things we need to be working on and give us a feel for how we match up against a (national title contender)."
A weekend after adjusting to Daylight Savings Time, the Lady Flames will have to reset their internal clocks to get in the right mindset to play back-to-back games in a span of 14 hours.
"Playing a midnight game always tests everyone's preparation," Lowes said. "We're excited for it. We expect everyone to be healthy for this weekend. Last year was a great first year and the second annual contest should be a good one."
The Lady Flames will sport navy blue throwback jerseys accentuated by a crème color and emblazoned with the original logos Liberty used on its uniforms. An online auction for the specialty jerseys will remain open through next week.
