Liberty outshot Utah 55-13 in Saturday’s 9-0 triumph as Brooklyn Adams posted her first shutout of the season.
"Our (defensemen) were involved, and we had lots of point shots this weekend, with lots of traffic," Lady Flames Head Coach Chris Lowes said. "It was just really nice to get offense from the blue line. I thought we looked dangerous up there, and the girls did a good job. We talked a little bit about that, point shots, and making them count."
Liberty (6-0) outshot the Utes (2-2) by a 55-13 margin and sandwiched four goals in the first and third periods around a single score in the second.
"We've been really optimistic, we've been scoring by committee, lots of different girls getting involved," Lowes said. "We've got depth, and we're getting offense from our front line and our back line."
Sammy Peebles started the scoring by taking a pass from fellow graduate defenseman Allison Shaw and rifling a beautiful top-shelf shot from the point just 1 minute, 37 seconds after the opening faceoff. Sophomore forward Hayley Lee followed suit 39 seconds later, receiving a feed from sophomore defenseman Isabelle Pelletier and unleashing a howitzer of a shot from the top of the circle into the upper netting for a quick 2-0 lead. Graduate forward and head captain Brielle Fussy then finished a third top-shelf shot from beyond the circle, also assisted by Pelletier, with 6:40 to remaining in the period. Â
Lee later was later tended to on the ice and transported to the hospital after taking a hard fall and suffering an upper-body injury.
"Haley kind of got tangled with a stick and went down awkwardly," Lowes said. "She's at the hospital now. We're optimistic, but we're concerned about her."
Sophomore forward Presley Ellis, one of three Liberty players with two goals in Friday's opener, extended the Lady Flames' advantage to 4-0 with an unassisted goal at the 5:00 mark.
"It was a really good start," Lowes said. "Our first three shots were ridiculous. There were no screens on any of them, just shooters being shooters. We came out firing both nights, and tonight, to get up 4-0, our competitors stepped up."
Graduate forward and alternate captain Haley Battles was the only player to score twice, netting the sole goal of the second period off assists from Shaw and Fussy at the 9:12 mark. She scored again in the third period on a top-shelf backhand in front after receiving a feed from sophomore defenseman Jules Lefaive.
"Battles had a great game," Lowes said. "I really loved her first tip on the screen. She was positioned in a really good place. The second one was typical Battles."
Sophomore Brooklyn Voortman, who shifted back from forward to defenseman, started the third-period scoring by threading a follow-up shot through the five-hole after an initial shot from the high slot by Lefaive.
"Voortman's playing really well, especially as a new defenseman, so I'm really excited about her game," Lowes said. "She had a really good touch there … a really good reaction with her stick on the ice. It's going to be a really good year for her."
Junior defenseman Victoria Khou stretched Liberty's lead to 8-0 by punching in a putback of a shot by junior forward Tristan Craig with 14:09 left in the third before junior forward Ellie Sarauer capped the scoring on the power play off assists from junior defenseman Sophia Adamek and Shaw.
"Utah is a talented young team," Lowes said. "It's early in the season, and we're a veteran team, and we looked like it. We got two convincing wins, and we got some girls going."
The Lady Flames return to the LIC for a series against Rhode Island on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Â
