Cora Williams netted seven goals in the last three games and the Lady Flames are off to another fast start after opening last season at 20-1.
Liberty University's ACHA Division II women's hockey team experienced an action-packed Fall Break, with four games in four days on its road trip through West Virginia and Maryland simulating the schedule it might expect at the national championships near St. Louis in March.
The Lady Flames improved to 9-1 by defeating the Mountaineers, 5-1, on Thursday night in Morgantown, W.Va., before sweeping a series at Lawrence Tech (Mich.), winning 4-3 in overtime Friday and 7-0 Saturday in Farmington Hills, Mich., and concluding their trip with a 5-0 triumph Sunday at Adrian College's Arrington Ice Arena in Adrian, Mich.
Junior forward and alternate captain Cora Williams continued to provide offensive production, netting seven goals over the last three games. In the opener at Lawrence Tech, she scored twice in the final 3:45 of the second period off assists from graduate defenseman and alternate captain Madison Natter and freshman forward Sabrina Honeycutt, respectively, to lift Liberty to a 2-0 lead. Liberty sophomore forward Calissa Klein extended the advantage to 3-0 with a goal off assists from senior forward Guin Donovan and senior defenseman Emma Wallace 1:40 into the third period. However, the Lady Flames allowed the host Blue Devils (3-1-1) to score three unanswered goals in an 11-minute stretch of the third period to tie the contest and force overtime.
With the teams skating 3-on-3 for the 5-minute extra period, Liberty freshman forward Sasha Haring netted the sudden-death game winner unassisted just 1:40 into the action.
Williams scored twice more in Saturday's much more decisive rematch, with senior goalie Abby Manzewitsch posting a shutout in net. Lady Flames graduate defenseman and alternate captain Kate Walhof manuevers the puck around a West Virginia player during last season's matchup at the LaHaye Ice Center.
Klein scored first for the Lady Flames before Williams sandwiched her two goals — the first assisted by graduate defenseman and alternate captain Kate Walhof — around one by sophomore forward Patricia Misiak. Haring added an unassisted goal before Walhof stretched Liberty's lead to 6-0 by finishing a feed from freshman forward Emma Bardwell and sophomore defenseman Kelsea Barta capped the scoring off an assist from Walhof.
At Adrian on Sunday afternoon, Williams recorded her second hat trick of the season, scoring three times against the Bulldogs (0-5) after she had racked up four goals in last Sunday's 8-2 win at Delaware. Liberty outshot Adrian by a 49-14 count for the contest, with Williams starting the scoring off assists from Misiak and Brylie Beddell just 19 seconds before the first intermission.
She stretched Liberty's lead to 2-0 by finishing a feed from sophomore forward Abby Rogers with 8:33 left in the second before Klein extended it to 3-0 off a pass from freshman forward Arianna Pastoor at the 3:51 mark.
Pastoor scored a shorthanded goal with 3:07 remaining in regulation before Williams completed her hat trick off assists from Walhof and Beddell. Manzewitsch made 14 saves to post her second shutout of the weekend.
The Lady Flames will return to the road this weekend with a series at the University of Maryland at 8:40 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Monday. Senior goalie Abby Manzewitsch posted her first two shutouts of the season on Saturday at Indiana Tech and Sunday at Adrian College.
