Pimsiri Wilhelmy netted both Liberty goals in Saturday’s tie with Navy before scoring twice more in Sunday’s 10-1 rout of Bowling Green.
"The ladies have played 10 games over the past three weekends and have continued to show tremendous determination, resilience, and tenacity, while competing with great sportsmanship and integrity on the ice," Lady Flames Head Coach Rena Leone said. "I couldn't be more proud of how they continue to compete, support one another, and represent Liberty University and our program, on and off the ice."
Graduate defenseman and alternate captain Kate Walhof scored Liberty's first and third goals — unassisted just 34 seconds after the game's opening faceoff and off an assist from senior forward and head captain Cora Williams to extend Liberty's lead to 3-1 with 8:44 left in the second period.
Sophomore forward Shirley Whitmore capped the scoring with a second insurance score off assists from junior forward Abigail Rogers and freshman defenseman Ava Clark with 12:37 to play in the third period.
In the showdown with Navy, which the Lady Flames defeated to capture their first DVCHC Tournament title last season, sophomore forward Pimsiri Wilhelmy netted both of Liberty's goals. She scored the first with 34.6 seconds remaining in the first period — just a minute and a half after the Midshipwomen had taken a 2-0 lead — and second shorthanded with 2:15 to go in regulation. That knotted the game at 2-2 and forced a 5-minute overtime period featuring 3-on-3 play. Both teams were held scoreless in that extra time before Navy won the shootout, giving it the tournament crown, though the game officially was recorded as a tie in the ACHA standings.
Lady Flames freshman goalie Nicole Danae Duenas Abin made 39 saves before allowing Navy right wing Suzahn Vollstad — who had netted the second goal for the Midshipwomen — to score the only goal in the shootout.
Liberty outshot the Falcons, 44-20, and Duenas Abin made 19 saves.
Over the weekend of Oct. 23-25, Liberty traveled to Pennsylvania for the second week in a row and bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Lebanon Valley College in Hershey, Pa., to post 4-0 and 9-0 shutouts at Villanova University and the University of Pennsylvania, both DVCHC opponents in the Philadelphia area.
This weekend, the Lady Flames will return to the LaHaye Ice Center for the first time since their Sept. 25-27 season opening contests to host perennial DVCHC contender Delaware on Saturday at 1:15 p.m. and Sunday at 12:15 p.m. Liberty maintains a 19-10-1 record all-time against the Blue Hens after sweeping last February's series at the LIC by 7-0 and 8-2 scores.
