Liberty finished 0-for-7 on power-play opportunities and former Lady Flames goalie Amanda Storey made 33 saves to secure a 1-0 Adrian win.
Opening its regular season on the road against defending national champion Adrian College, Liberty University's ACHA Division I women's hockey team came up on the short end of the stick in a defensive duel, losing 1-0 Friday night at the Arrington Ice Arena.
The Bulldogs (7-2-1) netted the game's golden goal on a power play with 6:11 remaining in regulation when Kali Foerster received a pass from Tess McKerrow and unleashed a point shot that was redirected off a defenseman's shin pad past Liberty junior goalie Alex Keith.
"It was a really competitive game, and a very tight battle," Lady Flames Head Coach Chris Lowes said after the teams combined for 13 penalties, the last three in the third period against Liberty. "It was definitely a special teams game, as neither team played very disciplined. They took seven penalties, we took six, but we lost the special teams battle, 1-0, and that was the final score. We had our chances, we just didn't execute."
The Lady Flames, who finished 0-for-7 on power-play chances, outshot the Bulldogs, 33-28, and Keith made 27 saves. Former Liberty goalie Amanda Storey, who graduated last year, earned the shutout for Adrian with 33 saves.
The two teams will meet again back at Arrington on Saturday at noon.
"We are just starting the journey, and there is a lot we can improve on and lots to like," Lowes said. "There is certainly stuff to build on. We're excited to play them again. It will be a good one, and a quick chance to go even the score."
