LU Dance debuts 2026-27 routines at Freshman Kickoff, Meet the Team events

The Lady Flames are gearing up for an action-packed fall semester while prepping for their third trip to nationals in the spring.
The LU Dance team, one of Liberty University's 42 Club Sports programs, performed at the Freshman Kickoff, a highlight of Welcome Week held Aug. 21 in the Liberty Arena, and again at the Liberty Football Meet the Team event the next day in the Liberty Football Indoor Practice Facility with hundreds of fans and players on hand.  Â
The Freshman Kickoff was a time for the LU Dance team, along with members of Liberty Cheerleading and Liberty's Marching Band, the Spirit of the Mountain, to teach the incoming students cheers and explain Game Day and Flames fan culture.  Â
"It's a really great time to be able to show what Liberty is all about and to show the school traditions we have," LU Dance Team Head Coach Liz Hubbard said. "It's also amazing because we get to continue to build our partnership between cheer and marching band as well, and we get to work together to bring school spirit to these freshmen."  Â
Held in the Liberty Arena, the Freshman Kickoff also allows the new students to learn the in-game chants and the Liberty fight song, "Fan the Flames." Â Â
The Flames Football Meet the Team event, another collaborative effort with the LU Dance, cheerleading, and marching band, was another opportunity for the teams to showcase the routines they will incorporate into all of Liberty's home games at Williams Stadium this season. Â
"The Meet the Team event was one of the coolest things, since a lot of the people that come from the community, so there were a lot of families, kids, as well as students," senior LU Dance team captain Kyleigh Engle said. "It's really sweet to see them interact with the players, the dancers, the cheerleaders, and the band, and just see the fruit in the fact that, they get to see us at Game Day, but now we actually get to interact with them one-on-one and seeing what it means to them and the joy that it brings them."Â
The Liberty Dance Team will also compete for the third consecutive year in the spring at the College Classic National Championships in Orlando, Fla., where dancers will perform both Pom and Jazz routines at the Division 1 level. Although the season is just beginning, the Lady Flames are already focusing on developing and practicing skills and techniques to be showcased at this annual competition. Â

"We are focusing mainly on group skills and seeing where all the girls are on specific moves, and also making sure that, even though dance at football games is very different, we still are set on good technique and habits in every rep," Hubbard said. Â Â
The LU Dance team has 21 members, including six seniors, this season, and is continuing to grow in community with one another. The Lady Flames are primarily focused on using dance as a form of worship to God and view each performance and competition as an opportunity to let their collective light shine for Him.  Â
"Our one and only purpose is to glorify the Lord in everything we do, and with that there's just so much joy that pours out as we are dancing," Engle said. "We really do just have the Spirit of the Lord within us, and it's a blessing to get to share that on game days. So, I am so excited to continue to do that this season and lead the girls on my team in that as well." Â
Along with being at every home football game at Williams Stadium and a large number of men's and women's basketball games in the Liberty Arena, the LU Dance team will also perform at the Flames' ACHA Division I men's hockey game at the LaHaye Ice Center on Nov. 7 against Stony Brook University and host clinics in both the fall and spring semesters. Â
