The Lady Flames will compete in the Division 1 Large Pom and Large Jazz divisions at the April 11-12 national event in Orlando, Fla.
Liberty University's Club Sports LU Dance team rehearsed both of its routines (pom and jazz) that it will compete with at the April 11-12 College Classic during Sunday's LU Dance Nationals Showcase, a ticketed event held in the Liberty Arena.
It was a collaborative showcase with two other dance groups on campus, Divine Call Dance and D-TREX, as well as the James Madison University Dukettes. Each group performed two routines: LU Dance and the JMU Dukettes performed both their Division 1 Large Jazz and Large Pom routines; D-TREX performed two upbeat hip-hop routines, one of which was choreographed by seniors in the group; and Divine Call Dance shared its routine from Saturday's late-night Spring Coffeehouse, hosted by Student Activities in the Vines Center, and a lyrical piece that reflected on listening to God's voice.  Â
"It's a really exciting event for us," Lady Flames Head Coach Liz Hubbard said of the Showcase. "We compete in Florida, where some people cannot travel to, so a lot of parents and family get to come down and they get to show their friends, (classmates, faculty and staff) these routines. Our heart is just to really get these teams the opportunity to have people come and watch them. A lot of these teams are used to performing at (Athletics) events where not everyone buys tickets, or not everyone shows up to watch them. I think it's really special for all these teams to have people show up because they want to watch them. It means a lot to my girls, and it means a lot to these other teams, too." Â
JMU accepted the invitation  perform its routines before its April 8-12 NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship competition in Daytona Beach, Fla.  Â
LU Dance plans to continue the Showcase event next spring and invite more groups from around the state. It focused on this final week of preparation for next weekend's Dance Team Union's College Classic. This will be the third year that the team has competed in this event, and second time in person after entering once virtually. The Lady Flames placed third out of nine programs in the Division I Pom category last spring.  Â
LU Dance will compete in a field of eight teams in Division 1 Large Pom and Division 1 Large Jazz. The Large Pom event will include the University of Oregon, the Alabama Crimsonettes, Indiana University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Baylor University, Kent (Ohio) State University, and the University of Georgia. In Division 1 Large Jazz, Liberty will be one of 24 teams in a highly competitive category.  Â
Leading up to this, the team has held additional practices to fine-tune their routines for the highly competitive environment of the national competition.  Â
"Leading up to nationals, it's definitely been intense," Hubbard said. "They've been working (on routines) at the same time that they have basketball games. We're also practicing right before those games, going over competition routines and making the most of our time." Â
Â
Both the Jazz routine and the Pom routine incorporate elements of Liberty's mission and the Gospel. The jazz routine is to the lyrical song Via Dolorosa by Sandi Patty, and explains the week Jesus had leading up to the crucifixion. The Pom routine is an upbeat piece that features parts of the song "Praises" by ELEVATION RHYTHM, mixed with other high-energy Christian songs to remain true to the team's Christian values.
"Through these routines, we want to share our faith; that's a huge thing," Hubbard said. "We want our routines to come across as super competitive, while staying true to who we are as a university. I am really excited for our Jazz dance and the song because it points to the hope we have in Heaven and people don't usually see that side of dance as an act of worship." Â
