Top-ranked Lady Flames stun No. 5 Saints with three unanswered goals in third

Liberty erased a 2-0 deficit to win its seventh straight game to start the spring semester.
"I didn't love energy or execution early on, but I was really happy with our answer," Head Coach Chris Lowes said after the Lady Flames improved to 27-0-1. "I really liked our response in the third. The girls dialed in and took more pride in our game, and I hope we can carry that into (Saturday's 4 p.m. EST rematch)."
He said the series opener was reminiscent of the national final, when Liberty erased a 1-0 deficit in a 2-1 double-overtime triumph that clinched their seventh crown.
"This was a bigger comeback," Lowes said. "They were in control."
After a scoreless first period, Saints forward Haley Beckett, the leading scorer in the league who has netted seven game-winning goals, skated across the blue line and beat Lady Flames senior Alex Keith one-on-one by sneaking a wrist shot past the top-rated goalie in the nation.
Maryville (14-10) doubled its advantage on a partial breakaway off a poorly timed Liberty line change later in the period.
But the Lady Flames finally caught fire in the third, sparked by a goal on a two-on-one finish by Isobel Pettem-Shand off a beautiful feed from fellow graduate forward and head captain Brielle Fussy with around 13:00 remaining in regulation.
Liberty then proceeded to net the equalizer and the game-winner in a span of 30 seconds in the final four minutes. Senior forward Brookelyn Beauchamp put away a spinning rebound putback of her own blocked shot. Then, sophomore forward Presley Ellis won a net-front scramble for the puck and drove hard to the crease before lifting the Lady Flames to their first lead at the 3:30 mark.
"The girls stepped up and scored some big-time goals," Lowes said, noting they generated a few quality scoring chances before ending the shutout bid by the Saints. "We created some offense, got some momentum, and felt them pulling back. We cleaned things up (on attack) with more possessions, more offensive zone time, and by playing cleaner hockey."
Liberty outshot Maryville by a 45-33 count, and Keith made 31 saves to improve to 15-0-1 after allowing multiple goals for only the second time this season and second time against the Saints.
"We only have three regular-season games left, so we're trying to get results, but we're also trying to find elements to our game where we need to improve," Lowes said. "Today's game brought some concerns but also a lot to celebrate. Hopefully (on Saturday), we will come out and play the first period like we did the third tonight and finish this weekend out in style."
