Graduate forward Allison Greene assisted the game winner late in the second period before adding two insurance scores in the third.
The Lady Flames (3-0), who had their 16-game winning streak snapped by Midland (Neb.) University in the ACHA Division I National Championship final last March near St. Louis, started their quest for an eighth national title on the right track thanks to two goals and one assist from graduate transfer forward Allison Greene.
"We're 1-0 (in ACHA play) and just starting to build our resumé for the (national) rankings, so this is an important road trip," Liberty Head Coach Chris Lowes said, noting the Minutewomen slipped to 2-4. "It was our opener, but they're five games into the season, and they had split with Niagara, a national tournament team. To fall down 1-0 after a long bus ride, I was really happy with our resolve. The girls stayed after it, and they eventually knew that the offense would get going. Now, after winning Game 1, it is important to complete the sweep."
Caitlyn Tremblay put the Minutewomen on top early by finishing a feed from fellow forward Shea McDonald past Liberty junior goalie Brooklyn Adams.
But after being shut out in the first period, the Lady Flames netted the equalizer and game winner in a span of just over a minute in the second. Freshman forward Charlotte Lawson scored on a shot from the point through traffic off an assist from senior forward Hayley Lee with 5:11 left before Evie McGonagle put away a pass from Allison Greene with a wrist shot over the pad of UMass goalie Sophie Shipton for a 2-1 edge with 3:58 to go.
Then in the third, Greene added two insurance scores. The first came at the 12:37 mark on a shot through the slot off an assist from senior forward Ellie Sarauer and second was unassisted on a wrist shot through traffic in front with 4:16 remaining in regulation.
"Allison Greene, one of our two transfers from Indiana Tech, is a stud," Lowes said. "We had good contributions throughout the lineup, from our rookies and transfers, and some of our vets had their moments, too."
Liberty outshot UMass by a 44-16 margin and Adams made 15 saves to secure the win.
"Adams locked down after their first goal," Lowes said, noting graduate goalie and alternate captain Alex Keith will start between the pipes in Friday's 6 p.m. rematch back at the Mullins Center.
The Lady Flames finished 0-for-3 on the power play and held the Minutewomen scoreless with two penalty kills.
"Our special teams weren't very good, but it's early in the year, and we haven't spent a lot of time on them," Lowes said. "Overall, it was a good start for the girls. We're 1-0, that's the goal. One game at a time. (Friday) will be a big one, and our girls, after they get a good night's sleep, will be energized and excited to play them again."
