Liberty expects a much stiffer challenge when it makes its first road trip to Rowan (N.J.) College this weekend.
"We did a really good job in the offensive zone, got a lot of shots and a lot of good opportunities," Flames third-year Head Coach Josh Wagner said. "Overall, we have a lot of new guys with a lot of potential and a lot of talent."
The Mustangs combined their AAU DII and DIII teams to form one squad this season.
"Stevenson has improved a lot from last year," Wagner said. "They're a good team. They've got some big bodies. It was a good first test."
The Flames got two goals from junior defenseman Jared Meyer, including the first on a blast from the blue line off assists from freshman forward Kash Benson and sophomore forward Josiah Martinez to start the scoring and the second set up by sophomore defenseman Colin Bowman to stretch Liberty's lead to 5-0.
Freshman forward Luke Kim netted his first goal for the Flames on a right-crease putback of a shot by senior defenseman Ethan Locklear off a secondary assist from Lamoureux before graduate defenseman Brayden Sheen scored off an assist from freshman forward Aidan Dickson. Benson extended Liberty's advantage to 4-0 with 3:15 remaining in the first period by putting away passes from Bowman and sophomore forward Benjamin Powell.
After Meyer's second goal, Martinez padded the lead to 6-0 by finishing assists from senior forward Thomas Mougin and senior forward Zach Lemons, last season's leading scorer.
Lamoureux, who played his undergraduate career on the Flames' Division II squad, completed the scoring with his first goal at the DIII level, unassisted.
Though Liberty dominated Stevenson in shots, 67-7, and junior Trey Thompkins made seven saves to post the shutout, Wagner said the defense had a couple lapses that could have led to scores for the Mustangs.
"Obviously, we didn't get tested a whole lot in the D zone and we need to lock some things down a little better," he said.
He anticipates a stronger challenge this weekend when the Flames travel to Glassboro, N.J., for games against Rowan College on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
