Liberty routed Columbia with extremely balanced scoring, shutout performance in goal.
Liberty University's Division III men's hockey team got goals from 10 different players to overwhelm Columbia (N.Y.) University in Saturday night's semifinal round of the AAU National Championships at the Community First Igloo in Jacksonville, Fla., winning 10-0.
The Flames (25-2) advance to Sunday's 1 p.m. final against St. John Fisher (N.Y.) University, which eliminated the Flames in pool play last season. In Saturday's late-night semifinal, the Cardinals defeated Fairfield (Conn.) University by the same 5-1 count that Liberty beat the Stags by in Friday's quarterfinal matchup.
On Saturday, Liberty outshot the Lions (17-9-1), 64-26, for the game, scoring four goals in the first period before tacking on three in both the second and third stanzas to cruise into the final with its most lopsided win of the tournament.
Sophomore defenseman MacGuire Graham started the outburst before senior forward Kelly Stroik, sophomore forward Aiden Hannegan, and senior forward Thomas Mougin capped the first-period scoring.
Aiden Dickson stretched the lead to 5-0 just 24 seconds into the second period before fellow freshmen forwards Ethan Barber and Parker Smith extended it to 7-0. Sophomores William Blair and Josiah Martinez scored just over a minute apart midway through the third period and freshman Joey Walter iced the win with a shorthanded empty-netter at the 2:58 mark.
Junior Trey Tompkins started in net and played the first two periods before sophomore Hunter Chubb relieved him to start the third.
