Returning members of the Flames and Lady Flames will be active participants in helping to screen prospective teammates at the two three-day events.
The Women's Select Prospect Camp, set for April 9-11, will welcome current high school sophomores through seniors to experience life at Liberty in conjunction with the final College For A Weekend of the spring semester, as well as to get a feel for what it is like to play on the Lady Flames' Division I and Division II teams. Cost for prospective student-athletes is $75, not counting the $50 CFAW registration fee, to give participants a glimpse of specific fields of study as well as the athletic and spiritual culture on campus.
"Over past two years, the growth of the girls select camp has been phenomenal, and it has been helpful in the recruiting efforts for the women's program," Club Sports Recruitment and Summer Planning Coordinator and Director of Hockey Operations Brett Berthiaume said. "Holding it on a separate weekend from the men's camp means we don't have to worry about overlapping ice time."
Then, from April 22-24, men's players born in 2008 or earlier (ages 18-and-over) will have the same opportunity with an immersive experience within the Division I, II, and III ranks. Registration cost per player is $195.
"We are super excited to have prospective men's and women's players hop on the ice with the coaches and returning players for next year, so that they can have an idea of what playing hockey at Liberty is like, to get a better grasp of the levels of competition and pick the brains of current team members about their time at Liberty," Berthiaume said.
Both camps will test registered players' skills and stamina through on-ice and dryland training sessions as well as simulated games between teams made up of current and prospective players. Afterwards, each will have one-on-one assessment meetings between players and coaches offering constructive feedback.
Last year, Michael Fischer, a defenseman from Ontario, was recruited to the Flames' Division I squad and several current DII and DIII players were identified at the spring select camp. Meanwhile, DII women's Head Coach Rena Leone received commitments from four freshmen on this season's team at the 2025 camp.
"It is very beneficial for everyone involved, for (DI men's Head Coach Kirk Handy and DI women's Head Coach Chris Lowes) and their staffs to get a better look at potential players," Berthiaume said. "There may be some surprises."
Camp participants are encouraged to attend Friday morning Convocation in the Vines Center and will be invited to attend panel discussions and engage in Q&A sessions with representatives from the Academic Advancement, Holistic Development, Sports Medicine, and Sports Performance staffs to learn about all the Club Sports program has to offer.
Those attending the women's prospect camp will also have the privilege of watching a Friday night Liberty Baseball game against Jacksonville State from inside the Flame Train.
Each of the three groups of the men's camp will have two practice sessions led by Liberty coaches in addition to the two scrimmages and two opportunities to join tours of campus with other prospective players.
"One of the benefits of these camps is that each and every year we find unique and special ways to involve our returning players," Berthiaume said. "They give us as coaches and recruiters feedback and give the visiting players a really accurate assessment of the program itself, what the atmosphere here is like, and what this university is all about. At the end of the day, our players are our biggest recruiters, and our goal is to have every returning player involved in the process."
