Liberty got a hat trick from senior forward Zachary Lemons and a goal and two assists from graduate Roman Lamoureux in a 7-3 second-game win.
Liberty University's Division III men's hockey team wrapped up its fall semester with a sweep of Penn State Harrisburg — which competes in AAU Division 2 — winning 3-1 on Saturday and 7-3 on Sunday at the Twin Ponds Arena in Harrisburg, Pa.
"The games went well against PSU," said third-year Head Coach Josh Wagner, whose team improved to 11-2 on the season. "(Senior forward) Zachary Lemons (Liberty's leading scorer last season) had a hat trick in the second game. He's doing great."
In the first game, the Flames opened a 3-0 lead with goals by defenseman Jared Meyer assisted by graduate forward Roman Lamoureux and sophomore forward Aidan Hannegan less than 5:00 into the first period; senior forward Kelly Stroik set up by Lemons and freshman forward Aidan Dickson on a power play with 7:49 to play in the second period; and freshman forward Luke Kim, who finished a feed from freshman defenseman Nolan Scheetz with 6:46 remaining in regulation. Liberty outshot the Lions by a 38-16 margin, and junior goalie Trey Tompkins made 15 saves before his shutout bid ended in the final 4:39.
Lemons scored three goals in a 16-minute stretch spanning the second and third periods before Lamoureux — who assisted the game's first goal by Kim and Lemons' third score — capped the Flames' scoring at the 9:55 mark of the third. Junior forward Benjamin Semark and Hannegan netted the other two goals for Liberty, which outshot the Lions, 44-30. Sophomore goalie Hunter Chubb made 27 saves, allowing single goals in each period.
The Flames finished the fall semester with a 6-0 record in the LaHaye Ice Center, including decisive sweeps of the College of William & Mary (6-1 and 8-0 on Oct. 25-26) and Virginia Military Institute (17-1 and 19-0 on Nov. 14-15).
One of their two losses this season was against an ACHA Division II team, High Point University, which Liberty led before giving up a tying goal on a high-stick deflection late in a 5-4 setback on Nov. 20 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
"All in all, even though we lost, I am very proud of the performance that we had," Wagner said, noting freshman forward Parker Smith netted two of the Flames' four goals.
Liberty rebounded to sweep the Panthers' DIII team by 6-2 and 8-0 scores on Nov. 21-22.
The Flames will open their spring semester schedule by playing Middle Tennessee University, which is 26-7-1 and ranked fourth in AAU DII, Jan. 16-17 at the LIC.
"MTSU is one of the top teams in ACHA DIII, which will be very good competition," Wagner said. "It will be a good test (to start 2026)."
Last season, Liberty entered the AAU National Championships seeded No. 1 among D3 teams and barely missed advancing out of its pool into the Final Four. The Flames are currently ranked No. 1 again, well ahead of No. 2 Alabama (11-6), No. 3 St. John Fisher (N.Y., 12-4-1), which eliminated them at last season's nationals, Jefferson (N.Y.) Community College (15-4), Columbia (N.Y.) University (7-4), and No. 6 Rowan (N.J.) University (11-6), which it split a series against at the start of this season.
