No. 2-ranked Liberty got goals from forwards Hayley Lee and Brookelyn Beauchamp against the No. 10 Purple Eagles, improving to 14-0 with its eighth shutout in 10 ACHA games.
Freshman goalie Emma McDonald posted her second shutout in her second career start for Liberty University's No. 2-ranked ACHA Division I women's hockey team, which scored another two-goal triumph to complete a series sweep of No. 10 Niagara (2-4-2), Friday afternoon at Hyde Park Pavillion in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
The Lady Flames (14-0) started the scoring in the final 2:00 of the opening period on a beautiful wraparound goal by sophomore forward Hayley Lee, who picked up the puck in the left corner and swooped around the cage before threading her shot through the five hole of Niagara goalie Mackenzie Addley.
After a scoreless second period, Liberty added an insurance goal in the final 10 minutes of the third when junior defenseman Sienna McClinchey gathered the rebound of her blocked shot and assisted senior forward Brookelyn Beauchamp's authoritative finish from the high slot for the game's final score.
The Lady Flames improved to 5-0 against the Purple Eagles, who only launched their program three seasons ago. Liberty defeated Niagara 6-1 in the final round of pool play to clinch its 12th consecutive trip to the Final Four last March near St. Louis before going on to win its seventh national championship.
Next weekend, the Lady Flames return to the LaHaye Ice Center to host their second Midnight Mayhem matchup on Saturday, Nov. 8, against No. 5 Maryville in a rematch of last season's national championship final, which they won 2-1 in double overtime.
That will kick off a busy November as Liberty meets the Saints in the series finale on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 4:30 p.m. before entertaining UMass-Amherst on Nov. 14-15 at the LIC and concluding its fall semester schedule with a series at No. 4 Minot State on Nov. 21-22 and Jamestown (N.D.) University on Nov. 23.
