Liberty's top three lines scored and freshman goalie Brooklyn Adams posted the first shutout of the season to extend its winning streak to six games.
"We played really good hockey, and it was a great way for us to wrap up our road trip," Lady Flames Head Coach Chris Lowes said after his team improved to 6-1 in ACHA play. "It's been a really good start to the year for our team, and today we got the decisive victory that the computer rankings will like and put us in a really good spot."
Just over five minutes after the opening faceoff, junior forward Brookelyn Beauchamp put away an assist from senior forward and alternate captain Zosia Adamek for a 1-0 Liberty lead. The Lady Flames added two more goals before period's end with freshman forward Presley Ellis scoring off assists from senior defensemen Madison Glynn and Sammy Peebles at the 8:49 mark before Peebles netted an unassisted goal 3.5 seconds before the first intermission.
"That was a great individual effort," Lowes said of Peebles' play. "She caused a turnover and scored on a breakaway, putting it top shelf."
Then, with 11:22 left in the second period, sophomore forward Ellie Sarauer capitalized on Liberty's only power play off an assist from sophomore defenseman Sophia Adamek.
Finally, in the third, the Lady Flames added two more unanswered scores from senior forward and head captain Brielle Fussy, off assists from Sarauer and senior forward and alternate captain Zosia Adamek, and freshman forward Tristan Craig, who finished feeds from senior forward and alternate captain Haley Battles and freshman defenseman Isabelle Pelletier with 10:19 to play.
"Different people have stepped up, and we saw that again this weekend," Lowes said. "Battles got going, which was really encouraging. Craig had a really good weekend with three goals in the last two games playing on the same line as Battles and Ellie (Sarauer). We had a bunch of really good performances and production from a lot of places. Fussy and her line of Zosia Adamek and (freshman forward) Brooklyn Voortman played well all weekend. Today, one of our best lines was Ellis, Beauchamp, and (freshman forward Hayley) Lee."
Liberty outshot the Jimmies (3-7-2-1) by a 41-17 margin and freshman goalie Brooklyn Adams made 17 saves to improve to 2-0 and record the first shutout of the season for the Lady Flames.
"Our goalies have been playing well and Brooklyn made some nice saves," Lowes said. "She played really solid and looked confident."
Junior goalie Alex Keith will represent the Lady Flames on the East squad in Sunday's second WMCH All-Star Game at 1 p.m., joined by Glynn, Battles, and the Adamek sisters.
The WMCH has proven itself to be the strongest conference in ACHA Division I, with five of its eight teams ranked top 10. Last February, the East squad, made up of Liberty and the three St. Louis-area teams — Maryville (Mo.), McKendree (Ill.), and Lindenwood (Mo.) —defeated the West squad featuring players from Jamestown, Midland, Minnesota, and Minot State.
"It will be very competitive, and a high level of competition," said Lowes, who will represent Liberty on the East All-Stars' bench. "It's a good way to highlight and celebrate our girls and cool to see them get recognition, as well as to do social kinds of things with other players in the league, many of whom already had relationships from playing together growing up. I'm excited to hopefully see the East team retain its title."
