Liberty extended its program-record winning streak to 17 games with two key DVCHC wins on the road.
Liberty University's ACHA Division II women's hockey team stretched its winning streak to 17 games over the weekend with key DVCHC victories over Rowan (N.J.) University and the University of Maryland in a fall semester-ending series on Friday night and Saturday morning in West Chester, Pa.
Despite holding a 35-14 shot advantage in Friday's 3-1 triumph, the Lady Flames (21-1) needed an empty-net goal from freshman forward Abigail Rogers, from nearby Doylestown, Pa., in the closing minute of regulation to gain separation from the Owls.
Rowan (6-5) started the scoring with a power-play goal by Maggie Bowman midway through the first period before Liberty sophomore forward Allison Gailitis netted the equalizer with 9:02 left in the second period and freshman forward Calissa Klein scored the game winner at the 7:01 mark of the third.
Junior goalie Abby Hodsden made 13 saves to secure the win in net.
Against the Terrapins (7-5), the Lady Flames scored in each period and Hodsden made 17 saves to post her seventh shutout of the season. Liberty outshot Maryland by a 33-17 margin in the 3-0 win.
Sophomore forward Cora Williams netted the game winner with 4:16 remaining in the first period, finishing a feed from junior forward Izzy Crossman, before Klein converted an insurance goal off assists from Williams and Rogers on a power play with 51 seconds to go in the second. Freshman forward Ella Moerman capped the scoring with an unassisted goal with 18:46 remaining in regulation.
The Lady Flames will return to action and look to continue their winning ways against DVCHC foes Pennsylvania on Jan. 24 and Villanova Jan. 25-26 at the LaHaye Ice Center.
