Zosia Adamek and her younger sister Sophia accounted for three of Liberty's five goals and freshman Brooklyn Adams allowed one goal in recording her first ACHA win.
Less than 15 hours after pulling out the opener against the Saints (9-5-1) in overtime in the first women's hockey Midnight Mayhem in program history, the Adameks all but put the rematch away with back-to-back goals by at the end of the second period and start of the third, extending the Lady Flames' lead to 4-0.
"We definitely knew that Maryville wasn't happy with that loss, so it was good to show them that it wasn't a fluke that we beat them in overtime last night and we just took it to them," Zosia Adamek said. "It was really good to come out (in ACHA play) last weekend, even splitting with (defending national champion) Adrian (College). This weekend just showed how good our team's going to be."
Maryville outshot Liberty 36-26, but the Lady Flames (3-1) got better quality shots and capitalized, including two goals on the power play.
"We finished," Lady Flames Head Coach Chris Lowes said. "We found a way and, we had some good offensive execution. We hit a couple posts and had a couple odd-man rushes where our execution was good. It was nice to get those two insurance goals in the third, with girls just making plays and getting production when it matters."
Zosia Adamek started the scoring with 15:50 left in the first period when she pocketed a point-blank shot past Maryville goalie Hannah Petrusev. Sophomore forward Ellie Sarauer stole the puck back in front before senior forward and head captain Brielle Fussy sent a short pass to Adamek in the left crease for the sure finish and 1-0 Liberty lead.
The Lady Flames capitalized on a power play in the final minute of the first period when junior forward Brookelyn Beachamp received a feed from Zosia Adamek and drove out of the left corner before slipping an assist to junior defenseman Emerson Oakes for a finish in front and 2-0 advantage at the 0:56.5 mark.
With Liberty back on the power play in the final minute of the second, Sophia Adamek took a pass out of the high slot from senior defenseman Madison Glynn and lifted a wrist shot from the top of the left circle that rung off the crossbar and right post for a bar-down snipe and 3-0 lead with 29 seconds to play.
"That was a beautiful shot, ripped to the top corner," Zosia Adamek said of her younger sister. "She's been doing really well. Lowes has been putting her up at forward and on defense so she has been producing as a duality player, which is awesome."
Then 27 seconds into the third, Adamek skated from her own goal line up the center of the ice before lifting a shot from the inside edge of the right circle into the upper netting to complete her hat trick and put the Lady Flames in control, up 4-0.
"It set the tone for the third period and pretty much sealed the game," Adamek said. "I wouldn't say I'm the fastest player on the ice, but it definitely helps when you have a heads-up play and some speedy wingers drawing the defense to them."
"That was a good read by (Adamek) and good job by Fussy and Sarauer, driving with her and gathering all of the attention and Zosia just made a shot, a nice finish," Lowes added. "We can see that she's going to have a big year for us. We see that in practice."
Senior forward Haley Battles extended Liberty's lead to 5-0 with 15:03 remaining in regulation by slamming a feed from Sarauer into an open net after a rebound of Battles' blocked initial shot in front.
The Saints ended freshman goalie Brooklyn Adams' shutout bid after a turnover in the defensive zone and quick turnaround shot in the right circle by leading scorer Haley Beckett slipped between Adams' glove and the lower right post for the final score with 8:01 left.
The Lady Flames will make the first of four trips to the St. Louis area this season next weekend for the Maryville Showcase in Chesterfield, Mo. Liberty will challenge No. 5 Midland on Thursday at 9:15 p.m., before playing a rematch against the Saints on Friday at 9:15 p.m., and facing No. 14 Jamestown on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. Then on Sunday at 1 p.m., the top players from around the league will represent their respective teams at the second annual WMCH All-Star Game.
