
DII Lady Flames show no mercy in 12-1, 14-0 sweep of Mercyhurst

After opening 2023 with back-to-back losses to Rowan (N.J.) University on Jan. 13-14, Liberty University's ACHA Division II women's hockey team has won four games in a row over the past two weekends, including a 12-1 and 14-0 sweep of Mercyhurst University on Saturday and Sunday at the LaHaye Ice Center.
The Lady Flames (13-6-1) netted five goals in the second and third periods of the opener, when they outshot the Lakers (5-8) by a 66-22 margin and went 3-for-6 on power-play opportunities. Sophomore center Madison Gaddy and sophomore defenseman Madison Natter both netted two goals, in the first and second periods, respectively, freshman defenseman Emma Wallace scored goals in the second and third periods, and sophomore forward Isabel Gracia added one goal in the third and distributed four assists.
In the rematch, Liberty only outshot Mercyhurst by a 28-11 margin, but netted 14 goals, with five coming in the first period and seven in the second.
Sophomore forward Camille Sponaugle tallied two goals in the first period before Gaddy netted two in the second and LaPorte contributed one goal and one assist in both.
Freshman goalie Abby Hodsden (10-5-1) made 32 saves in the two games, allowing just one goal in the series and posting her fifth shutout of the season in the rematch.
The Lady Flames, who debuted at No. 4 in last month's Southeast Region rankings, travel to Rowan (No. 5 in Southeast) for a rematch of their semester-opening setbacks on Friday at 9:15 p.m. and Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
