The Flames and Lady Flames placed sixth out of 25 teams overall and first among Division III programs.
"We did quite well, especially considering that due to the ice (up at the Liberty Mountain Gun Club), we lost a lot of practice time," Head Coach Jacob Davis said. "It was one of the biggest ACUI regional tournaments in the country, and a lot of the best DI, DII, and DIII teams across the nation are in this region."
The top 10 Flames and Lady Flames will advance to the ACUI National Championships from March 15-22 at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio. Liberty qualified for nationals based on its third-place Division III showing at last year's competition.
"We have about five weeks now until nationals, which gives us plenty of time to take what we learned at this tournament and the one back in October (the ACUI North Central Regional Championships, where the Flames and Lady Flames placed third) and apply it," Davis said.
Liberty's national travel team will be determined by combined scores from the two regional shoots as well as observations from Davis and Assistant Coaches Jonathan Britton and Chloe Sterner, all former team members.
At the Lower East Coast event, the Flames and Lady Flames fared the best in the Skeet competition with a 477 team total out of a possible 500. They were led by sophomore Ryan Doyle (98) and Matt Daniels (96), followed closely by fellow senior captain Dalton Krossman (95), freshman Gavin Glossner (94), and senior Gabe Richardson (94).
Trap was another strong event for Liberty, with Glossner (94) posting the top score ahead of seniors Ezra Jackson (94) and Mark Yoder (92), Daniels (91), and sophomore Garrett Byers (90) for a total of 459 out of 500.
In Skeet Doubles, Daniels was Liberty's top shooter with a 48 out of 50 followed closely by senior Lilly Cooper (46), Krossman (45), freshman Mattox Purdham (44) and Richardson (44) for a team score of 227 out of a possible 250.
Daniels and Doyle tied for the high scores in Super Sporting Clays with rounds of 45 out of 50, followed by Purdham (43), Glossner (42), and Krossman (42) for a 217 team total out of 250.
Krossman was the team's high scorer in Double Trap with a 43, followed by Daniels (40), Jackson (38), sophomore Connor Archer (37), and Cooper (36) for a total of 194 out of 250.
High Overall leaders for Liberty were Daniels (400 out of 450), Krossman (389), Glossner (387), Purdham (386), and Doyle (376).
