Competing against four other teams from the Virginia Conference in an unsanctioned event, Liberty finished 5-0 in its season-opening tournament.

"William & Mary was last season's section champions, so it was nice to see them again and get a feel for how they would compete this upcoming season," Liberty Assistant Coach Mikayla Johnson said. "Our team's goals for the weekend were to build chemistry between the players, develop our offensive strategy, and represent Christ both on and off the field. We were particularly focusing on having a disciplined end zone so that points where we scored close to the end zone were clean and patient as opposed to feeling rushed."
The Lady Flames defeated No. 5-seeded Mary Washington University in the second round of pool play, 13-5, and dominated No. 4 Virginia Commonwealth University in the third round, 13-2, before winning their first round of bracket play over George Washington University, 13-6.
"Our captains, (junior) Marina Abila and (graduate) Grace Wilson, helped anchor our team on offense, keeping the disc alive many times as they worked it between themselves," Johnson said. "(Freshman) Mallory Clark was used on both offensive and defensive points as she proved to be a very dynamic player. She had a team-high 13 (defensive breakups) overall this weekend. Kali Grayson was also pivotal in … displaying great defense on the field, helping us get the disc back when we needed it the most."
Freshman Maddie Clark paced the attack with 15 scores over the weekend, as the top deep threat for Wilson and other handlers to throw to. Sophomore Morgan Allen and Evalee Baker also displayed great cutting styles to gain separation from defenders before catching the handlers' passes.
"Rookies Sylvia Janssens, Elizabeth May, and Abigail Wang were rotated in the handler position, and all performed very well," Johnson said. "They are learning the timing of being a handler, and all displayed good discipline as they waited for their cue to keep the disc alive."
After each game, the Lady Flames gathered around in a spirit circle with each team to build good rapport while building up and praying over their opponents.
"Disciple Makers Abby Lasko and Haylee Goral invited each team to pray with us before parting ways, and we were blessed that players from each team took the opportunity to stay and pray with us," Johnson said.
Liberty is looking forward to hosting a tournament over the weekend of Nov. 15-16.
