Seeded second, the Lady Flames went 3-1 in Glen Allen, Va., to secure one of five bids to the May 2-3 Atlantic Coast Regional Championships.
Liberty University's women's ultimate team finished third in the USA Ultimate Conference Championships on Saturday and Sunday in Glen Allen, Va., to qualify along with Virginia, William & Mary, Virginia Tech, and James Madison University for Atlantic Coast Regionals.
On Saturday, the second-seeded Lady Flames won both of their matches, defeating fifth-seeded Virginia Tech, 15-8, and third-seeded JMU 12-7.
After opening Sunday's bracket play with a 10-9 loss to fourth-seeded William & Mary, which dropped it to the consolation final, Liberty dominated its rematch with the Hokies, 13-5.
"Saturday's games allowed us to work on our offensive and defensive flow against teams in our section, most of whom we have not seen at a tournament in a while," Lady Flames Assistant Coach Mikayla Johnson said. "We suffered a tough loss on Sunday morning against William & Mary in a game that came down to the final (universal point). William & Mary was able to seal the deal with a score, and energy definitely felt low after that game."
Head Coach Bethany Weldy talked with the team and rallied them for its final game of the tournament.
"During the last game of the weekend, the players just got to have fun," Johnson said. "They love this sport, and they love playing with each other, and the game reflected exactly that."
The Lady Flames were led offensively by sophomore Mallory Clark, senior Abigail Lasko, and junior Rachel Grant, who were primary handlers for the weekend, along with senior Haylee Goral, who stepped into that role. They worked to keep the disc alive in high-stakes situations over the course of the competition. The team's leading scorers over the weekend were sophomore cutter Maddie Clark and graduate Kali Grayson.
On the defensive side of the disc, the team used both man-to-man and zone formations. Senior Evalee Baker and juniors Sarah Dickerson and Courtney Trahant made big plays on defense along with sophomore Aniyah Young and freshman Naomi Sample, who worked in new defensive positions to contain the disc downfield.
With the team's third-place finish, it will now focus on preparing for the May 2-3 Atlantic Coast Regional Championships, also to be played in Glen Allen, Va. The top two teams in the regional competition will qualify for the USA Ultimate National Championships set for May 22-25 in Rockford and Waukegan, Ill.
