Liberty's freshmen shined again to help the Lady Flames post a strong showing in the Duke Dog Classic.
Led by freshman Mali Campbell's runner-up showing in the All-Around competition, Liberty University's gymnastics team placed second to host James Madison University in Saturday's Duke Dog Classic in Harrisonburg, Va.
The Lady Flames accumulated a record-high 110 points but landed 2.7 points behind the Dukes (112.7).
"Scores and judging were particularly wacky at this meet, so although our team score looks amazing, there were some very incorrect scores for our team and JMU, especially on bars," Liberty Head Coach Jessie Lowe said. "However, I felt like the team made good progress on beam, and on floor we are proving to be really strong."
Campbell, who totaled 37.8 points in the All-Around to finish behind only JMU's Leah Nitzan (38.7), won on the uneven bars with a score of 9.70 and placed second in the floor exercise (9.50) followed by freshman teammates Kaylee Ockerman (third, 9.30) and Kelsey Bailis (fourth, 9.25). On the balance beam, Campell landed in third place with a 9.30 and Bailis tied for fourth (8.90). Finally on the vault, Campbell tied for third with a score of 9.30 and junior captain Annabella James and Ockerman tied for fifth at 9.20.

"This was the team's first opportunity to land their vaults on harder competition mats and they adapted well despite some initial struggles in warmup," Lowe said. "On bars, we had several improvements from last week. Overall, they are showing progress even with short practice time frames between meets, and we hope to make more improvements for our next meet," Feb. 23 at the Cherry Blossom Invitational, hosted by George Washington University in Bailey's Crossroads, Va.
Then, Liberty will host its second Flipping Flames Invitational on March 23 in the LaHaye Multipurpose Center.
