Junior forward Tristan Craig recorded her first hat trick at Liberty to spark the offense and senior goalie Alex Keith posted her third shutout in a row to anchor the defense.
Junior forward Tristan Craig netted her first shutout as a member of the Lady Flames and graduate forwards Brielle Fussy, Haley Battles, and Isobel Pettem-Shand each scored twice to pace the Lady Flames' attack. Defensemen Sophia Adamek, a junior, senior alternate captain Emerson Oakes, graduate Sammy Peebles, and sophomore Isabelle Pelletier also contributed to the offense, with Pelletier's top-shelf wrist shot from the right circle capping the scoring midway through the third period after she moved up to the forward lines.
"It was great balanced scoring from different lines, so that was awesome for us," Liberty Assistant Coach Frank Keating said. "We're very fortunate to have the talent that we do. We tested all of the defensemen up front at one point and a lot of the forwards back because sometimes they are going to be in a defensive position if a defenseman rushes the puck."
He said the Lady Flames focused on refining their systems rather than seeking to score as many goals as they could.
"We really tried to work on our passing and things that we wanted to, versus attacking all of the time, so we had the opportunity to do some of that in game conditions," said Keating, who noted that the Lady Rams (0-2) gave the Lady Flames a good workout. "Rhode Island played their hearts out there on the ice. They never gave up, had great attitudes, and fought to the end."
Lady Flames senior goalie and alternate captain Alex Keith made 9 saves to post her third consecutive shutout in net.
Craig and Battles, playing on the same line with freshman forward Chloe Moses, accounted for five goals through the first two periods while the second line of senior forward Brookelyn Beauchamp, Pettem-Shand, and sophomore forward Peyton Ellis netted three goals and the top line of Fussy, Liberty's head captain, graduate forward and alternate captain Zosia Adamek, and junior forward Ellie Sarauer tallied two.
The seven-time ACHA Division I national champion Lady Flames (8-0) will return to the LIC for a series against four-time champion Lindenwood (Mo.) University (0-7, which won titles in 2006 and 2009-11) next Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
"We'll take what we've seen in these games, look at game film and try to make some adjustments to get ready for Lindenwood first, and then we'll do the same the next week, in getting ready to go to Adrian (Mich.) College," Keating said of the Oct. 24-25 series at the 2024 national champion Bulldogs (3-3-1).
