Graduate forward Allison Green scored a hat trick in Friday’s 5-1 rematch after Liberty needed two third-period goals to pull away for a 3-1 win in Thursday’s opener.
After clinching the series opener 3-1 with an empty netter in the final seconds, the Lady Flames (9-2) opened a 2-0 lead after the first period en route to a 5-1 triumph in the rematch.
"Maryville's had a few injuries to start, and had a couple more even tonight, and we were at full strength," Liberty Assistant Coach Frank Keating said. "Our ladies came out with a lot of intensity and were able to take control early. They played a really solid game, and (graduate forward) Allison Greene came up with a hat trick, which was awesome."
Liberty outshot Maryville (2-5) by a 44-20 count for the contest and junior goalie Emma McDonald started both games in the series, limiting the Saints to one goal for the second straight outing.
"Emma McDonald had a great game," Keating said. "She faced more tough shots in the first period tonight than she had the whole night (on Thursday)."
Freshman forward Marissa Richard started the scoring with 10:39 left in the first period when she capitalized on assists from Greene and senior defenseman and head captain Sophia Adamek.
"There were a lot of passes across the rink from (freshman defenseman) Charlotte Lawson to Sophia Adamek and Sophia took what looked like a shot and it was a beautiful pass and Marissa knocked it into the back of the net for a great goal, her first in ACHA play," Keating said.
Just 4:22 later, freshman defenseman Kendra Garlock doubled Liberty's lead by netting her first goal as a Lady Flame, finishing feeds from graduate forward and alternate captain Brookelyn Beauchamp and junior right wing Brooke Olson.
Greene got on the scoreboard, extending Liberty's lead to 3-0 with 17:08 left in the second period off assists from junior forward Hayley Lee and junior defenseman Jules Lefaive.
After Emma Leibrecht ended McDonald's shutout bid a minute and a half later, putting away a pass from Haley Beckett at the 15:34 mark, the Lady Flames responded quickly with Greene recording her second goal just 18 seconds later set up by Richard and Lee.
Finally, with 5:17 remaining in regulation, Greene completed her hat trick again off assists from Lee and Richard for the final score.
On Thursday, Liberty got goals from graduate forward and alternate captain Tristan Craig early in the second period off assists from senior forwards Ellie Sarauer and Sienna McClinchey and Lee with 1:53 remaining in regulation set up by Adamek and Greene after Beckett had scored the tying goal early in the third period. The Saints pulled backup goalie Olivia Towpich, who replaced injured starter Hannah Tresek, and Olson netted the empty netter with five seconds to play.
Liberty extended its winning streak to four games after losing back-to-back ACHA National Championship semifinal matches with Michigan Dearborn at the LaHaye Ice Center on Oct. 16-17.
The Lady Flames' second 12-hour road trip in as many weekends proved productive.
"The girls are getting used to the travel," Keating said. "That is really a good thing since we've got one more trip to St. Louis next month and one in February," for the WMCH Tournament before returning to the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Mo., for the ACHA DI National Championships in mid-March.
Liberty has next weekend off before hosting No. 3-ranked Niagara (N.Y.) University on Nov. 6-7 at the LIC.
"We played Niagara up at their place last year and are looking forward to them coming down to our place," Keating said. "They're ranked high in the top five, so it will be a good test."
