Incoming Liberty University's ACHA Division I women's hockey forward Hayley Lee, a native of Surrey, British Columbia, brings a versatile skill set and refreshing outlook to the Fall 2024 recruiting class.
"We are excited to welcome Hayley Lee, a talented hockey player who will fit in great with our team on and off the ice and has a history of winning," Lady Flames Head Coach Chris Lowes said. "Hayley came to visit last spring after we had been following her for more than a year. She is a good student, a great teammate, and we knew right away we wanted her here at Liberty."
He said Lee has showcased tremendous ability and potential throughout her high school career and he expects her to flourish as a member of the five-time-defending ACHA DI national championship Lady Flames.
"Hayley is a dynamic skater that plays a skilled but also gritty style of hockey," Lowes said. "She can create her own shot, make plays for teammates, and is tough defensively on the puck. I am excited for Hayley to get here in the fall … to push the level in practice and in games and to watch her grow in all areas over her college career — spiritually, academically, and as a hockey player."
The Delta Hockey Academy player who was a two-time ESSO Cup National Silver Medalist for the British Columbia Elite Hockey League's Fraser Valley Rush in 2022 and 2023, when she scored 21 points in 30 games, is an extremely fast and physical two-way player. Lee signs her letter of intent to continue her hockey career with the Lady Flames.
"I pride myself on creating havoc," said Lee, who has netted 18 points in 16 games this season. "I like to make plays, seams, and lanes for my teammates which creates scoring opportunities. I am a strong and hard working forechecker, offensively and defensively, and I specialize on the penalty kill, where I enjoy creating offensive chances shorthanded. I am in-your-face player who anticipates plays and likes to win the foot races. I'm not afraid of doing the dirty work and getting physical in the corners."
Lee has remained an active member of her ice hockey community, officiating at the elite AAA and Prep level I as well as helping to coach her little sister's team and working with female skaters who are new to the sport.
Off the ice, Lee has proven to be a young woman of many talents, which range from acting to cooking. She was named Clayton Heights Secondary School's 2023 Female Athlete of the year and her Coaches' Player of the Year for the school's ball hockey team.
"I enjoyed playing high school volleyball, as well as ice and ball hockey," she said, noting that she was a silver medalist with Team BC in the 2023 Ball Hockey Nationals 19U Female division and a bronze medalist for Team Canada's Inline Junior Women's Team in 2019. "When I have time, I have done a little acting for Disney+ as well. I really love cooking and baking with my family and going to the gym in my free time."
Lee has ambitious academic and career goals, with plans to pursue a B.S.N. in Nursing and a minor in physical education & health at Liberty before entering the medical field. She also is looking forward to the spiritual growth she will experience as a residential student at Liberty.
"I wanted to continue my studies at Liberty because I felt connected to the community and spiritual atmosphere," Lee said. "I also want to be a part of Training Champions for Christ, both by continuing my ice hockey career (with the Lady Flames) and serving throughout the (Lynchburg) community. I plan on striving for academic success, and I think Liberty will give me all the resources I need to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse while playing a sport I love."
She is excited to join Flames Nation and bond with her teammates as they continue to contend for WMCH and ACHA Division I championships.
"I am most excited for the many memories I'll make with my new teammates and the new environment," Lee said. "I can't wait to wear the jerseys and sport the crest, and to help Liberty continue to crush it."
