Liberty overcame 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to defeat the Saints, 5-3, late Friday night before facing Jamestown on Saturday afternoon.
A weekend after sweeping top-ranked Maryville University at the LaHaye Ice Center to overtake the No. 1 ranking, Liberty University's ACHA Division I women's hockey team broke open a tie game with two unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the No. 2-ranked Saints, 5-3, late Friday night in the second round of a WMCH Showcase in Chesterfield, Mo.
The Lady Flames (5-1) overcame an early 1-0 deficit with two goals in a span of two minutes midway through the first period, by junior defenseman and alternate captain Emerson Oakes, assisted by senior defenseman Haley Battles, and freshman forward Tristan Craig, assisted by Oakes.
Maryville (10-4-2) reclaimed a 3-2 advantage on back-to-back goals by Sydney Poisson four minutes into the second period and leading scorer Haley Beckett with less than four minutes remaining. Craig answered with the equalizer 38 seconds later off an assist from sophomore forward Ellie Sarauer and the game remained tied until the 4:44 mark of the final period. That's when junior forward Brookelyn Beauchamp netted the game winner off assists from sophomore defenseman Sophia Adamek and freshman forward Presley Ellis. Then, 2:15 later, freshman forward Brooklyn Voortman, a Division II call-up, added an insurance goal assisted by Battles for the final score.
Liberty outshot the Saints 34-23 for the game and junior goalie Alex Keith made 20 saves to improve to 4-1.
Liberty will conclude the WMCH Showcase against No. 14 Jamestown (N.D.) University on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. before Adamek and senior forward Zosia Adamek, her older sister, senior defenseman Madison Glynn, Battles, and Keith represent the Lady Flames in the second WMCH All-Star Game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
