Liberty defeated two Virginia universities, including the host Spiders, and two from North Carolina in last Saturday's tournament.
This past weekend, Liberty University's women's ultimate team traveled to the University of Richmond to compete in a non-sanctioned tournament featuring teams from the Virginia Conference as well as others from North Carolina. The Lady Flames posted an impressive 4-0 showing, defeating East Carolina University, 9-0; Wake Forest University, 8-3; Virginia Commonwealth University, 10-2; and the host Richmond Spiders, 10-5.
Team captains Grace Wilson, a graduate student, and junior Marina Abila provided excellent leadership and outstanding performances on the field.
"Both of our team captains were really anchors for the team," Lady Flames Head Coach Bethany Weldy said. "They just keep the disc alive and keep us in motion and flow when we get stagnant."
Freshman Madeline Clark sparked the team offensively, making several big plays as a handler and catalyst.
"She has handled it very well," Weldy said, noting that the position comes with a lot of responsibility as the quarterback on the field.
Madeline and her twin, fellow freshman Mallory Clark, had never played ultimate in high school and have learned everything through being on the team this semester.
"All of our rookie players have come really far and learned a lot throughout this semester, and it was evident in how we performed this weekend," Weldy said.
Although the fall is the team's offseason, the Lady Flames use it as a time to learn and jell as a team in preparation for the official season in the spring semester, starting with a tournament on Jan. 25-26.
