After landing two first-, two second, and two third-place showings at Richmond, Liberty will continue its fall semester schedule with regatts at Fairfax Station, Va., and Augusta, Ga.
This past Sunday, Liberty University's men's and women's rowing teams competed in the Richmond (Va.) Chase regatta on the James River, where its Women's Varsity 8A and Men's Double rowed to gold medal finishes.
The program has expanded with five new men on the team and six new women this fall, allowing the Flames and Lady Flames to enter more boats into races and continue to develop the program.
Junior Emily Tait served as coxswain on the winning Women's Varsity 8, encouraging rowers Kimberly Loutzenheiser, fellow senior Rachel Teague, sophomore Cailtin Kinsella, seniors Jada Lane and Robin Payton, juniors Allie Reed and Alayna Degan, and senior Lauren Thompson.
The Men's Double featured juniors Gideon Abbott on stroke and Kyle Meeker at bow leading the boat.
The Flames' Men's Novice 4 and Men's Single finished runner-up in their respective races while Liberty's Women's Novice 4 and Women's Varsity 8B boats placed third.Â
"The team is looking good this year, and I'm excited for our upcoming races," Head Coach Debbie Prowse said.
Liberty is looking forward to its next regatta, Saturday's Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax Station, Va.
"We'll be rowing against not only club teams but also some (NCAA Division III) programs, which will be kind of exciting to race against some higher caliber, more competitive boats," Prowse said. "That will be fun to really push us."
The team wasn't able to compete with one boat in Richmond due to an injury, but is looking to add that Women's Novice 8 lineup into the race this upcoming weekend.
Liberty will travel to one more regatta this fall, the Head of the South in Augusta, Ga., on Nov. 9, before shifting to indoor erg training for the winter months through March, when it will resume practices out of its boathouse on Smith Mountain Lake.
