Liberty University’s men’s Division I, II, and III hockey teams will host two camps for prospective players from May 17-19 at the LaHaye Ice Center: the second annual Liberty Hockey Select Camp, for players who were born in 2005 or earlier, and a new Young Guns Prospect Camp for players born between 2006-08.
“These camps are something that we are really excited about putting on this year, getting recruits out and players that are interested in what Liberty stands for, and being able to see a wide variety of talent from all over the United States and Canada.” ,” said Brett Berthiaume, Club Sports’ recruitment & summer planning coordinator. “Both are three-day prospect camps that serve the same purpose. For recruitment of future Flames players. With the Young Guns Prospect Camp, we are really excited about getting youth out on campus and to get our eyes on some young prospects and teach them about Liberty and our hockey program.”
The camps replace those previously held in conjunction with College For A Weekend (CFAW) events, which prevented prospects from various Junior leagues from traveling in the past. Both camps will offer a recruiting dinner and Q&A panel discussion on the opening night with Flames men’s hockey coaches and Club Sports staff, including Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and Performance Angie Witt and Director of Sports Performance Chris Kerr, to educate prospective Liberty student-athletes on all that the department does and has to offer, as well as two academic and sports performance outlook sessions on the final day.
“Last year, we committed to a couple guys at our select prospect camp, guys we’ve been talking to all year,” Berthiaume said. “These camps give players an opportunity to compete on campus in front of our entire coaching staff against other guys that are doing the same. It is also an opportunity to listen to representatives from other departments, including academics, as well as our holistic development and sports performance coaches, and to get a tour of the university.”
Players must apply to receive an invitation to be placed on a wait list to either of these camps, with their application fee applied to their $195 registration upon acceptance. Those not invited to this camp are welcome to participate in Liberty’s Development Camps, with the one designed for U16, U18, and over 18-year-old players set for June 26-29.
“The main difference between these two camps and the Development Camp is that they are application and invite-based,” Berthaiume said. “Our coaches will be looking through the applications and accepting those we want to see. We still want those players who are not quite there yet to attend the development camps in June, with three open to boys and one for girls of all ages.”
