A native of Huntsville, Ontario, Canada, Handy graduated from Liberty in 1999 with a B.S. in Psychology and a Minor in Business. He played right wing for the Flames’ ACHA Division II team from 1996-2000 and still ranks as one of the program’s top scorers. He was a team captain and earned ACCHL Forward of the Year and Tournament MVP honors as a senior before being inducted into that conference’s Hall of Fame in 2015.
Now entering his 27th season as Liberty’s head coach, Handy has compiled a 581-240-39 record, with the majority of those games at the Division I level. He has guided the Flames to 10 consecutive ACHA Division I National Championship bids, including three Final Four appearances in the past six seasons.
Handy was a finalist for ACHA Division I Coach of the Year in 2006-07 after leading Liberty to the national tournament in its first season competing at that level. The following season, he took the Flames to their first Final Four and a No. 4 national ranking. In 2019-20, at the end of a 33-4 season highlighted by a No. 2 ranking for the final three months, Handy was named ACHA DI Coach of the Year. This past season, he was honored as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ annual Character Coach award-winner.
Ingrained with a passion to see Liberty University continue to grow and fulfill the vision of its founder, Dr. Jerry Falwell, Handy was instrumental in the planning, development and building of the LaHaye Ice Center and the hockey program’s five teams — Division I, II, and III men and Division I and II women. In the early days, he handled everything from ticket sales to advertising, recruiting, and game operations, while also working in Liberty’s admissions department and overseeing recruitment events, such as College For A Weekend (CFAW).
After helping to start the department in 2008 with five teams and 82 student-athletes, Handy also serves as a Liberty Vice President and Athletic Director for Club Sports, overseeing the program’s growth to 42 teams and more than 700 student-athletes.
“I believe Liberty University is the greatest university in the world,” he said. “My wife and I consider it a privilege to serve at Liberty and carry on the vision of Dr. Falwell to build young Champions for Christ.”
Handy and his wife, Jannie, who he met at Liberty, have four sons — Parker, Preston, Pryce, and Porter.
