The Lady Flames are playing their last away tournament at Stevenson (Md.) this weekend before hosting a season-ending Liberty Invitational next Saturday.
The Lady Flames posted a 3-2 win over Southern Virginia University and also defeated the host Hornets before losing to Stevenson (Md.) University, 3-2, and finishing the weekend with a 5-3 win over Regent University.
"We were missing a couple of girls on Friday, but the girls who were at the tournament did a great job of stepping up and filling those spots and moving around positions and rankings and playing differently," Liberty Head Coach Payton (Carter) Davis said. "Even though we were playing the same teams over again that we played before, they were playing different pairs from those opponents, and they did a good job of adjusting to the needs of that."
The Lady Flames' sophomore duo of Anna Moody and Josephine Malone went undefeated in all their matches throughout this tournament.
"It's just hard to beat a team three times, and we've beaten University of Lynchburg three times now, so that's awesome," Davis said. "I'm really proud of the way that they continue to get better towards the end of the season."
Last Friday and Saturday, the team traveled to Richmond, Ky., to compete in the Eastern Kentucky University Invitational, where they finished 1-3.
The Lady Flames lost to NCAA Division I programs from host Eastern Kentucky, 5-0, and Morehead (Ky.) State University, 4-1. They then defeated Ottawa (Kansas) University, 4-1, before being swept by the University of Tennessee Chattanooga's NCAA DI team, 5-0.
"I was also proud of how we competed in that tournament," Davis said. "We played a lot of high-level teams, and as a club-level team, it's really good to play that kind of competition. We had seen EKU and Morehead State at our first tournament (in September), so we got to see the improvements our program can make. We held our own against those top-level teams, and that's really special and a testament to how hard this group works."
The team is currently competing in the Stevenson (Md.) University Invitational, its final away tournament of the season. It has matches set for 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday and noon and 4 p.m. Saturday against the host Mustangs as well as Southern Virginia University, Regent University, and the University of Lynchburg.
Seniors Kate Walters, Gracie Hall, Kinley Phillips, and Gabrielle Olson will be recognized at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, before the 2 p.m. start of the Liberty Invitational, the last tournament of the season for the Lady Flames.
