Five different players scored for Liberty, which can clinch its first Final Four bid with two more wins.
Liberty University's ACHA Division II women's hockey team opened pool play with a 5-2 victory over the University of Jamestown (N.D.) on Sunday at the Centene Community Ice Center's Plager Arena.
The Lady Flames (22-2), who captured their first DVCHC Tournament crown on March 2, broke open a 2-2 tie after one period by scoring three unanswered goals over the final 35 minutes and graduate goalie Kylie Mebs clamped down to secure the win by saving the last 14 shots on goal.
"We had playoffs two weeks ago, and we came off a huge win, so It's really cool to keep that rolling and stay positive and keep winning," Liberty junior forward and leading scorer Cora Williams said. "It's fantastic, such a blessing to be here with this group of girls. Getting a win on Day One is absolutely huge."Â
Senior forward Brylie Beddell started the scoring just over one minute after the opening faceoff by finishing an assist from freshman forward Pimsiri Wilhelmy. The Lady Flames clung to a 1-0 lead for the next 15:10 before Sabrina Honeycutt doubled the advantage off an assist from fellow freshman forward Sasha Haring.
The Jimmies (11-10-1) struck back with two goals in the final 3:36 of the period, with Leah Amsler's unassisted score coming just 12 seconds after the ensuing faceoff before Kaydence Thornsteinson finished a feed from Rylee Gee 55 seconds before the intermission.
The Lady Flames responded with two more goals in the second period, by second-leading scorer Calissa Klein off assists from fellow sophomore forward Abigail Rogers and
Wilhelmy at the 14:20 mark and Wilhelmy on a power play assisted by Williams just 49 seconds later.
Finally, in the third period, senior forward Guinivere Donovan capped the scoring unassisted at the 14:11 mark.
"Stretch passes were awesome today, on point," Williams said. "We were working so hard. We have so much depth in our lineup. We don't rely on one line, two lines, so it's really cool to produce offense from all four lines."
Liberty, which outshot Jamestown by a 30-23 count, will face Northeastern (Mass.) University (13-3) in Monday's second round of pool play starting at noon EST in the Centene Center's NHL Arena before taking on the University of St. Thomas (Minn., 13-4) on Tuesday at 2:45 p.m. St. Thomas defeated Northeastern, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon.
Only the top team out of the four-team pool will advance to Wednesday's semifinals with the national champion crowned on Thursday.
