The seven high school seniors and five juniors come from seven states as far away as Colorado.
Still riding momentum and on a spiritual high from winning its first MCLA Division I National Championship in May, Liberty University's men's lacrosse team will welcome 12 potential recruits, by invitation only, to its early semester Flames Futures Elite Showcase.
"We promote two events as premier recruiting opportunities for Liberty Lacrosse," Head Coach Kyle McQuillan said of this Showcase and another in January. "Prospective players often ask, 'What are the next steps?' And we tell them to get on our radar by attending one of our recruiting showcases."
"We have some really good candidates coming this weekend, and we are excited to showcase what we have to offer, and I'm sure they are as well," he added. "We have done a pretty good job of trying to capitalize on the success of last season, after winning a national championship and having pretty big success along the way on social media, which has helped increase the level of interest in the program."
The event will start Friday at 2 p.m. and conclude by 5 p.m. Saturday after a Showcase final and individual meetings for feedback between coaches and players.
"The format allows prospective players to experience two on-field sessions, meetings with coaches, and a panel discussion with some of Club Sports' staff to give them a better understanding of our lacrosse program, as well as our academic advancement, holistic development, sports medicine, and sports performance departments," McQuillan said. "It is an opportunity to consolidate everything Liberty has to offer in a two-day period, and to potentially develop relationships with our coaching staff and current players. We go through and try to identify guys that are really serious and try to get them an honest and fair evaluation."
The Showcase also provides the coaching staff two opportunities to see the prospects in action and to assess their strengths and weaknesses before potentially offering them to be a part of next season's recruiting class or the one coming in for Fall 2027.
McQuillan said seven of the incoming players are seniors in high school and the other five are juniors, with four coming from Virginia, two from North Carolina, and one each from Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
"Every recruit has a different story," McQuillan said. "We are still active in the recruitment process in going after guys that we feel would be a good fit from our culture and for our program to address the needs we have."
Tryouts for this season's roster will be held on Sept. 2 and 3 at the Liberty Lacrosse Fields, when McQuillan and his staff will be looking to add four or five players to their 36-man roster of 24 returning players and 12 incoming recruits. Practices will start Sept. 8 and the Flames will host an alumni game and MCLA National Championship rings ceremony on Sept. 20. They will later be honored during the Oct. 14 Flames Football game at Williams Stadium along with the seven-time ACHA Division I women's hockey national champions.
