For the 11th year in a row, the Flames Futures camps in July will offer quality instruction and glimpses of what life is like for players for the 2025 MCLA Division I national champions.
Liberty University's MCLA Division I national champion men's lacrosse program will host back-to-back weekend Flames Futures Summer Lacrosse Camps, a U15 camp from July 11-13 for rising elementary to middle school-aged boys and U19 camp from July 17-20 for rising high school boys.
Overnight campers will stay in East Campus housing and utilize facilities including the Liberty Lacrosse Fields, the Liberty Multipurpose Center, the LaHaye Ice Center, the LaHaye Recreation & Fitness Center, and Thomas Indoor Soccer Center.
This is the 11th consecutive summer that the camps are being offered.
"The first year was in 2014, the year after I finished playing," Flames Associate Head Coach Mike Zumpano said. "We had 27 kids that first year and have steadily grown to where we have had upwards of 80 campers, even through COVID. The goal is to get over 100 this year. We will cap each one at 75, and I don't think the younger kids' camp will get there, but we already have 50 registered for the older kids' camp."
Both camps will feature a total of eight sessions, including position development sessions with counselors assigned to players at each skill level based on the position they play, and a championship tournament held over the last two days of each weekend.
"We have counselors that were part of our championship team this year, including a number of All-Americans and strong returning players," Zumpano said, noting that will include graduate attack Keaton Mohs, the MCLA Division I Player of the Year who became its all-time leading scorer in the national tournament quarterfinals in Round Rock, Texas.
"Keaton is a great example of a guy who came to (Flames Futures) camp and it enticed him to become a Liberty player," Zumpano said, noting Mohs may share his testimony at the camps of what God's done in his life. "He is a rare example, but we have had great success using the camp as a recruiting tool as kids continue to build connections and relationships with other players here as counselors and with the coaching staff. At least half of our players (6 out of 11) from this year's incoming recruiting class are former campers."
Graduate faceoff specialist Caleb Hammett, who transferred from NCAA Division I UMass for his final season of eligibility and joined Mohs on the MCLA DI First Team, has also committed to serve at both camps.
"We are working out a promotional deal with him where any player who signs up with his promo code gets 10 percent off their camp registration," Zumpano said of Hammett.
Other camp counselors include honorable mention All-American defender Ben Chun, who graduated in May, and Peyton Park; fellow rising junior long-stick midfielders Graham Lilley and Kaeden Kuch; rising senior middie Gabe Dymmel; rising junior middie Kason Brehm; and rising junior goalie Ian Carvajal, an MCLA All-Tournament team selection.
In mid-August, Liberty Lacrosse will hold the first of its two annual Flames Futures Elite Showcase camps, with the second in mid-January, by invitation only.
"All but one of our incoming freshmen recruits attended one of our select camps, designed for high-end recruits," Zumpano said, noting those camps are by invitation only. "Summer camps are a great bridge as we have had a number of players come through them and then be invited to a select camp."
