Forward Luke Munroe, originally from Ontario, will have three seasons of eligibility at Liberty after playing the past two years in upstate New York
Luke Munroe, an incoming junior forward transfer from NCAA Division III SUNY Geneseo, committed to Liberty University's ACHA Division I men's hockey team after visiting campus and the LaHaye Ice Center for the first time this week.
"It was very impressive, to me and my dad who came with me," said Munroe, who met 10 returning Flames players in town for the summer and joined them for a team dinner. "I like the overall culture on the team."
Originally from Kitchener, Ontario, near Toronto, Munroe, who will turn 23 in June, played in the BCHL in Vancouver and the AJHL in Alberta before launching his collegiate career in New York.
"It was a great experience, seeing different parts of Canada while playing Junior hockey," Munroe said.
The 6-foot, 1-inch, 190-pound forward brings a versatile game to the Flames, having scored 23 goals and distributed 23 assists in 34 games with the MJAHL's Truro Bearcats in 2021-22 and 12 goals and 28 assists with the BCHL's Langley Rivermen and the AJHL's Sherwood Park Crusaders in 2022-23.
"I'm a two-way player, really just a team guy," he said. "I like being around the team and making people around me better."
Munroe previously played with Flames rising sophomore forward Liam Cox-Smith at Sherwood Park.
"He's a great player and another one who set me up with the coaches and talked to me about the possibility of transferring," Munroe said.
After earning a 3.7 grade-point average at SUNY-Geneseo, he said most of his credits will transfer to Liberty, where he plans to continue to pursue a B.S. in Business Administration & Data Analytics — Financial Planning degree through its School of Business.
Munroe is looking forward to having a larger impact with the Flames, who advanced to their third ACHA DI National Championships Final Four in the past five seasons this past March near St. Louis.
"That was more the reason for the move," he said after totaling seven points in 19 games with the Knights over the past two seasons. "I wasn't getting the opportunities my first two years (at SUNY Geneseo) that I hope to have starting right away at Liberty. It seems like they have a younger team, which is really something to look forward to. Seeing the younger players and how they did last year (at nationals), I am hoping I can contribute to help the team get back there and to take the next step next year."
He is excited about the opportunity the Flames will have to go on a third hockey outreach trip to Finland in January.
"(Head) Coach Kirk Handy talked about that (trip) and that seems like a really cool experience, something I'm really looking forward to," Munroe said.
