Liberty graduate Grace Wilson placed second in Division I women's singles and she and Cami Lazo lead the doubles competition with two rounds to go.
Liberty University's men's and women's disc golf teams are off to flying starts after the first two days of the College Disc Golf National Championships in Rock Hill, S.C., which conclude Saturday.
"We're doing really, really well," Head Coach Bowman said. "Our teams have completed two rounds and have two to go. We're moving into a wooded course for the last two rounds, which is our teams' strength, so they are excited for it to see if they can maybe gain some separation."
The Lady Flames posted the highest Division I singles finish in program history — for men or women — when graduate Grace Wilson, the leader after the 18-hole first round at 3-under 56, placed second out of 61 players with a nine-hole final round of 1-under-par 30. That was three strokes back of Emporia State University's national champion Atlanta Krueger (4-under 27), who shot a 1-under 58 in the first round.
"Grace was in the lead after the first day and battled with the Emporia State girl back and forth throughout the final round," Bowman said, noting Wilson birdied the first hole to gain a two-shot lead but bogeyed the second to give it back and did the same thing on hole Nos. 4 and 8, which were played back-to-back. "(Senior) Greyson Lifto won Division II singles last year, but we have not had a Division I player finish higher than second."
Wilson also teamed with senior Cami Lazo to seize a four-stroke lead in doubles play after "a phenomenal second round," according to Bowman.
After two rounds, Wilson and Lazo stand at 9-under-par to lead Emporia State's Krueger and Madeline Joiner (5-under) as well as Clemson (3-under) and Milligan (2-under) in a field of 30 teams.
Liberty's Division I men's team of Lifto, graduate Tim Schmidt, senior Jonah Burdick, and freshman Addison Sells, meanwhile, clawed back into contention with a strong second round and currently sit in sixth place at 8-under to trail front-runner Cincinnati (14-under) by six strokes. Charlotte (11-under), University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (10-under), Georgia Tech (9-under), and Emporia State (9-under) occupy the second- through fifth-place positions, respectively, in the field of 50 teams.
Even better, Liberty's Division II men's team of juniors Theo Lach, Evan Riley, and Kyle Sennett and senior John Weathersby stands in third-place tie with Cincinnati's B team at 8-under, just one stroke back of Mississippi State and Charlotte (tied at 9-under).
Last but not least, the Flames' Division III men's team of senior Ethan Burgin, sophomore William Hathaway, junior Jacob Pollard, and senior Christian Wilson find themselves tied for third place at 14-under, trailing only Milligan (18-under) and UNC Charlotte (16-under).
