Alumni of Liberty’s five hockey teams (three men, two women) are invited back to the LaHaye Ice Center from Oct. 31-Nov. 1 for fellowship, food, and fun festivities.
Women's Division I and II players and coaches are invited to compete in an alumni game that Friday, Oct. 31, from 1-2:30 p.m. followed by an open skate for players and their families and friends from 2:45-4 p.m.
Then on Saturday, Nov. 1, following a 9-10 a.m. family open skate, men's DI, II, and III alumni players and coaches are encouraged to lace up the skates and put on the pads and helmets for old time's sake as they play in a friendly cross-generational contest between alumni spanning the program's four-plus decades from 10:30 a.m.-noon.
Former players and their families are also welcome to take a tour of the locker rooms since their recent remodels from 12:30-1 p.m., as well as the rest of the LIC, which underwent a major renovation in 2015.
"For the men's side of things, there will be a lot going on, with opportunities for families to come back to see rink and how the programs have grown, to get quick insight and a snapshot of what we're doing and what we have done to build the programs to what they are now," said DII men's hockey Head Coach Christian Garland, who also serves as assistant director of development & Club Sports alumni. "We want to bring as many people back because they've been a big part of that, and we want to honor their legacy and show where we are now."
Alumni and their families can then go to the Homecoming Parade along University Boulevard at 12:30 p.m., before returning to the LIC, weather permitting, for a lunch provided by the Club Sports Varsity Club will from 1-2 p.m. on the sidewalk outside the rink. That will take place in front of plenty of tailgates in the LaHaye Parking Lot leading up to the Flames Football game against Delaware at 3:30 p.m. in nearby Williams Stadium.
Alumni are encouraged to follow Liberty Hockey's various social media platforms and others for Club Sports for more information as details become available or to email Menshockey@liberty.edu directly.
The 2024 Homecoming Weekend was extremely successful from a Club Sports standpoint, with 135 former men's and women's players returning for the occasion and many of them participating in the alumni games.
"Last year, it was awesome, a great event with great camaraderie," Garland said, noting it marked a return of the annual contest. "I don't think we had held an alumni game for quite some time before then, so we are hoping to continue to build on the success of last year and are looking to do that for Homecomings or Family Weekends for years to come."
Garland noted that many other Club Sports teams are planning alumni events over Homecoming weekend after last year, when 14 teams outside of the five hockey programs offering alumni gatherings with current team members.
