The Flames will split into two squads in the two-day unsanctioned tournament to allow their 13 newcomers to gain as much experience as possible.
With 13 newcomers on a 24-man roster, Liberty University's men's ultimate team features a healthy balance of young guns and veteran leadership. That mix of proven talent and untapped potential should help make the Flames a legitimate contender for one of the four or five Atlantic Coast Regional bids available at the end of the spring semester.
Returning leaders including junior captain Rupert Armentrout, who is complemented by sophomores Drew Brechner and Jack Anders, as well as two Disciple Makers in Micah Moore, a sophomore handler from Costa Rica, and senior Kennedy Wilson.
"We have a bunch of newcomers, including a few who played in high school, which is nice," Flames Head Coach Kevin Habermas said of freshmen Avery Levandoski, Luke Billingsley, and Silas Rideout. "All of the guys have really put in a lot of work and are looking good."
The Flames will put themselves to the test for the only tournament of the fall semester this weekend, when they split into two 12-man teams to compete in the unsanctioned Cav Cup hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.
"We are looking forward to it," Habermas said, noting the tournament will not be factored into the Flames' national ranking. "It's still really early, but things are going well in practices. We have been throwing a bunch of types of offense and defensive sets at the team and the guys have been pretty eager to learn and practice and they are excited to be going to work.
He plans to split the Flames into X and Y teams, with two even lines, as they compete against a full field of opponents very similar to that which they will face at the end-of-the-season Virginia Conference Championships, where Liberty earned its fifth regional qualification in the past seven seasons last spring.
Besides host UVA, James Madison University, George Mason University, Christopher Newport University, the University of Richmond, and Virginia Commonwealth University will participate in the event along with the University of Maryland and a couple alumni teams.
"Playing in an unsanctioned tournament is a good way to get people as much experience and as many reps as possible leading into the spring tournament schedule," Habermas said.
This is the third year Andy Lewis has served as Habermas' official assistant coach, after joining the team in 2017, playing through the 2019-20 season, and serving for three seasons as a dedicated volunteer coach.
