Anna-Mari Servin won her 145-pound weight class to help Liberty place second out of six mostly NCAA Division III programs in Buena Vista, Va.
Liberty University's women's wrestling team placed second out of six teams, just one point behind overall champion Marymount (Va.) University, at Saturday's Southern Virginia University Invitational.
The Lady Flames were the only club team in the tournament with the other five being NCAA Division III schools. Behind Marymount (71 points) and Liberty (70), Bluefield (Va.) College (64), SVU (62.5), Greensboro (N.C.) College (50.5), and Randolph College (42) rounded out the field.
"It was a very close competition," Liberty Assistant Coach Cendall Manley said. "As a team, we have been working hard on holding good position and fighting hard defensively. That seemed to pay off today and the girls were able to win some close matches."
Individually, sophomore Anna-Mari Servin finished first in her 145-pound weight class while senior Claire Wortz placed second in the 131-pound division, and freshman Faith Kiefer finished fourth in the 160-pound class. The Lady Flames had fifth-place performances from Aurora Pennington at 125, freshman Avery Stewart at 145, and senior Mackenzie Yates at 160.
Liberty will return to action at the NCWA National Duals hosted for the first time by the Apprentice School in Newport News on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, with a split squad also competing in the FSU Bobcat Open at Frostburg (Md.) State University that Saturday.
