Led by its gold medal-winning Women's Sparring C Team, Liberty University's taekwondo team finished first in Division 3 of its season-opening East Coast Taekwondo Conference (ECTC) meet hosted by Brown University in Providence, R.I., on Nov. 2.
Senior Hannah Wharton led Liberty to the Poomsae C Team quarterfinals.
The Flames and Lady Flames accumulated 84 team points to finish ahead of Ohio State (68), Duke (48), Princeton (8), Villanova (8) in its division, as well as Harvard, Albany, Connecticut, and Yale, which did not score. Overall, Liberty tied for eighth with Rutgers, which placed fifth in Division I behind Northeastern (476), MIT (240), Cornell (216), and host Brown (164). NYU (252), Army-West Point (236), and Cortland (120) had the top three point totals in Division 2.
Currently, after two tournaments, Liberty is ranked second in Division 3 and 12th overall.
Seniors Katrina McMillen and Hannah Wharton and junior Khara Pastean composed the Lady Flames' winning Women's Sparring team. Liberty also advanced two women's teams to the quarterfinals despite only having two competitors in the best-of-three match format. The Lady Flames' tandems of Wharton and McMillen advanced to the Poomsae C Team quarterfinals as did graduate Sophia Varrati and sophomore Emily Sloane in the Women's Sparring B Team competition.
