The Flames featured the individual singles and overall team champions from their Division I Red squad at the two-day event hosted by St. Bonaventure University.
Members of Liberty University's men's disc golf team spent the second half of their Fall Break carding some low scores and qualifying for the College Disc Golf National Championships at the Mid-Atlantic Region Championships hosted by St. Bonaventure University on Friday and Saturday in Olean, N.Y.
"Our teams competed incredibly well," Flames Head Coach Steve Bowman said after Sunday's doubles play. "We had all three teams in the hunt through the whole round."
Liberty's Division I Red earned a national bid as the overall champion.
Liberty's Red team of graduate Tim Schmidt, junior Jonah Burdick, senior Greyson Lifto, and freshman Addison Sells and its White team of seniors Paul Caracappa and John Weathersby, sophomore Andrew Hathaway, and junior Theo Lach both completed their last holes with amazing putts to finish in a five-way tie for first place with Slippery Rock University, Eastern Mennonite University, and Ohio University.
"After the first playoff hole, Liberty Red and Ohio University made birdies to continue the playoff and two holes later, Liberty Red birdied the hole while Ohio took par, giving Liberty the regional championship and sealing our bid for nationals," Bowman said.
Liberty's Blue team of seniors Christian Wilson and Noah Burchett, junior Jacob Pollard, and freshman Ben Mathews ended up in 11th place with a team total of 5-under par.
In Saturday's singles competition, Wilson and Sells were tied for first place after the first round while Schmidt and Hathaway also qualified for the 16-player playoff. After the second round, Sells took the title and Schmidt won a playoff for third place.
