Flames and Lady Flames players placed in the top four in multiple divisions for a successful start to the spring semester.
Liberty University's men's and women's racquetball team opened spring semester competition with its third Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Racquetball Conference (MACRC) tournament of the season this weekend at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, building on their second-place overall finishes there in October.
The Flames and Lady Flames had several first- through fourth-place singles and doubles showings across the board to combine for another strong team performance. Liberty now ranks third in the men's and second in the women's MACRC regular-season standings for a combined second-place ranking.
In women's collegiate doubles, junior Paige Jordan and senior Sylvia Growden teamed up for a second-place finish in Division 1-2 while sophomore Natalie Blank and senior Renee Riegel combined to capture first place in the Division 3-4 bracket, defeating freshmen teammates Madisyn Leyendecker and Amber Fredenburg in the final.
Individually, in women's Division 1-2 singles, Jordan and Growden finished second and third, respectively. Meanwhile, Leyendecker upended Fredenburg in the Division 3-4 White bracket final, Riegel placed second in the Division 3-4 Red bracket, and Blank came in fourth in Division 3-4 Gold play.
On the men's side, Flames freshman Matthew Cook and senior Timothy Adams joined forces to claim first in the Division 1-2 Gold doubles bracket, edging senior Luke Hagberg and junior Andrew Cook in the final. Meanwhile, in the Division 3-4 Gold doubles bracket, graduate Noel Allapatt teamed up with Nathaniel Cook to place second.
In Division 1-2 Blue men's singles action, Matthew Cook defeated Hagberg in the final and Adams finished fourth. Andrew Cook captured third place in the Division 1-2 Red bracket and Nathaniel Cook came in third in Division 3 Gold singles play while Allapatt won the Division 4 bracket.
The Flames and Lady Flames will travel to North Carolina State for the second time and their fourth and final MACRC regular-season tournament from April 5-7, the weekend before the March 14-16 USA Racquetball Collegiate National Championships at Arizona State University.
