Club Sports releases tryout schedules for start of fall semester

Tryouts for most of the 44 Club Sports programs are scheduled as early as the first week of classes, Aug. 20-25, and no later than Sept. 6.
Tryouts for most of the 44 distinct programs offered through Liberty University's Club Sports department are scheduled as early as the first week of classes, Aug. 20-25, and no later than the first week of September for the upcoming 2023-24 seasons.
After an informational meeting in the large conference room of the LaHaye Ice Center (LIC) on Friday, Aug. 18, at 3 p.m., Liberty's Division I, DII, and DIII men's hockey teams will be the first teams to start tryouts on Sunday, Aug. 20.
The DI squad will hold its first round of tryouts from 2-3:30 p.m., before finalizing the team following a second session from 2:30-4:15 p.m. on Aug. 21.
The DII team will take the ice on Aug. 20 from 4-5:30 p.m. for the first of three days of tryouts, concluding with skates from 4:45-6:15 p.m. on Aug. 22-23.
The DIII men will host the first of four rounds of tryouts Aug. 20 from 6-7:30 p.m. with the second set for 6:45-8:15 p.m. Aug. 21 and the last two from 6:30-8 p.m. Aug. 23-24.
"It is a great open-door opportunity," Flames DI men's hockey Associate Head Coach Jeff Boettger said.
The five-time-defending ACHA national champion Lady Flames' DI women's hockey team will open its tryouts from noon-1:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the LIC before the women's DII squad follows suit with its first skate session on Aug. 21 from 4:45-6:15 p.m. and a second and final session Aug. 22 from 7-8:15 p.m.
The Flames' men's volleyball indoor team, which graduated several players from its Division I squad this past spring, will hold tryouts from Aug. 21-23 from 4-6 p.m. in the LaHaye Multipurpose Center. Its women's beach volleyball team will have one tryout session on Aug. 22 at 3:30 p.m. on the East Campus courts (near the East Campus Field House and Liberty Field Hockey and Lacrosse Fields).
Liberty's men's and women's racquetball teams will offer three weeks of tryouts, from 4-7 p.m. on Aug. 21-24, Aug. 28-31, and Sept. 4-7 at the LaHaye Recreation & Fitness Center's courts.
Men's and women's riders interested in competing on the equestrian team must attend an informational meeting on Aug. 22 at 4 p.m. at the Liberty Mountain Equestrian Center or be in contact with the coaching staff. The team's first meeting is set for Sept. 7 in the LaHaye Event Space.
On Aug. 23, the women's gymnastics team, which graduated a large percentage of gymnasts from its NAIGC national runner-up roster, will begin a weeklong tryout process with a first session at 2:30 p.m. in the Liberty Club Sports Complex.
"It is probably going to be pretty competitive for the open roster spots for freshmen," second-year Head Coach Jessie Lowe said, noting that she has eight incoming student-athletes who have expressed interest in the team and requested that other prospective team members contact her before tryouts.
She plans to send her entire team to this season's nationals, set for April 11-14 in Albuquerque, N.M.
"We won't have a separate developmental team," Lowe said. "Everyone who makes the roster, I plan to have on the competitive team."
Also that Wednesday, from 5:30-8:30 p.m., the men's and women's rock climbing team will hold its tryouts at the LaHaye Recreation & Fitness Center's rock climbing wall.
The men's and women's taekwondo team will hold its informational meeting on Thursday, Aug. 24, at 6:30 p.m. in the LIC's conference room, before offering tryouts on Aug. 28-29 at 7 p.m. in the Olympic Training Center in the Candlers Station Shopping Center.
Also on Monday, Aug. 28, the synchronized skating team will hold tryouts bright and early, from 6-9 a.m. in the LaHaye Ice Center and the men's swimming team will dive into the first of six consecutive days of tryouts in the Liberty Natatorium — from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday (Aug. 30), and Friday (Sept. 1) and 6:30-8:30 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 29), Thursday (Aug. 31), and Saturday (Sept. 2).
The men's and women's triathlon team also will stage tryouts in the Natatorium from 5-7 p.m. on Aug. 28 before the rowing team holds tryouts at 7 p.m. in the Club Sports Complex. Both the archery (5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Liberty Mountain Gun Club (LMGC) field) and disc golf (6-9 p.m. at the Liberty Lacrosse Fields and East Campus course) select their squads for the upcoming seasons from Aug. 28-29.
Liberty's three shooting sports will hold overlapping tryouts on their respective ranges of the LMGC, with the rifle team firing first, at 5 p.m. each night from Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 28-30, followed by the action (pistol) team from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Aug. 28 and Aug. 31 and the shotgun squad on Aug. 31 from 4-7 p.m.
(Prospective shotgun team members must provide their own gun and ammunition and contact Head Coach Jacob Davis (jlssd1@gmail.com) before tryouts.)

Figure skating , under the direction of first-year head coach Courtney Courtney Kirschke, will stage tryouts in the LIC on Sept. 3 from noon-4 p.m. Finally, on Sept. 5-6 from 3-5:30 p.m., the men's lacrosse team will hold tryouts on its home fields.
