With its Sept. 15 opener against North Carolina State just two months away, tickets for Liberty University's ACHA Division I men's hockey team's 2023-24 season went on sale Thursday through the Liberty Ticket Office.
"We are projecting this to be one of the best years yet for season ticket sales," said Flames Head Coach and Club Sports Athletic Director Kirk Handy, who noted that all 10 of the skyboxes have been booked up with a waiting list forming. "Last year was a record-breaking year and we feel very good about breaking those records again this year. Credit to our marketing team and players who do a wonderful job trying to promote the team at Liberty and around the city of Lynchburg."
Handy met with new Liberty President Dondi Costin earlier this week, after he officially started on July 1.
"He is super excited to come out and support the hockey team and we are excited to see him in the president's box," he said, noting that Campus Pastor Jonathan Falwell, who is now Liberty's Chancellor, and new Flames Football Head Coach Jamey Chadwell attended games at the LIC last semester. "It's great having the administration on board with what we are doing and the way we're doing it."

Coming off its second ACHA Division I National Championships Final Four appearance in three seasons, Liberty will host an extremely competitive 20-game schedule in the LaHaye Ice Center (LIC), with defending national champion Minot State visiting Lynchburg, Va., on Sept. 22-23. On March 18, the Beavers overcame a 2-0 deficit to eliminate the Flames, 3-2 in overtime, in the national semifinals near Boston.
"We have a huge amount of momentum right now and we are super excited about it," Handy said, noting that the Flames drew an average of more than 2,700 fans per game. "We are coming off a record-breaking year for our summer camps, so God has been good to us and we have been able to build massive amounts of momentum around our ticket sales, summer camps, and all the other things going on around the rink."
This week, the ice was removed from the LIC in preparation for painting and prepping the base layer of the rink for the upcoming season for Liberty's five hockey teams (three men and two women) as well as its figure skating and synchronized skating teams.
When it opens back up, the arena will feature new sponsorship boards around the rink and a more efficient refrigeration unit keeping the ice solid.
