Team USA, featuring five players from Liberty University’s ACHA Division I men’s hockey team, shut out Team Canada, led by Flames senior goalie Hunter Virostek, 4-0, in Wednesday night’s World Cup of University Hockey championship game at the Felcsíki Ice Skating Rink in the central Romanian town of Câr?a.
Though it only outshot Team Canada, 23-22, Team USA, which finished 5-0 in the tournament, scored two unanswered goals in the first period and two more in the third, the last an empty-netter after Virostek was pulled for the final four minutes of play.
None of the five Liberty players scored for Team USA in the final, though Jacob Kalandyk took three shots in the final. He scored three goals in the tournament while fellow junior forward Jason Foltz added one goal and three assists, and both senior forward Matt Bartel and graduate defenseman Colin Baird had one assist. Freshman defenseman Laz Kaebel also played in all five games and totaled eight penalty minutes, second only to Kalandyk’s 10.
Virostek logged the most minutes (175.7) of the three goalies for Team Canada (4-1) and had the highest save percentage (87.5) and second-highest goals-against average (3.07).
