Skon named Southeast Region DII men’s hockey POY, Flames find out national field

Liberty University ACHA Division II men’s hockey sophomore goalie Lane Skon was named the 2023 Southeast Region Player of the Year after helping the Flames (26-4-1) clinch the No. 1 ranking in the Southeast Region and one of the region’s two autobids to the 16-team ACHA DII National Championships set for March 17-21 in Marlborough, Mass.
Skon, from Palmetto, Fla., is currently studying Exercise Science: Therapeutic and was named a Liberty honor roll student for the 2021-2022 school year. He finished the 2022-2023 season with a 15-2-1 record, a 1.96 goals-against average, and a 92.4 save percentage. He ranked third in ACHA DII in goals-against average, fourth in save percentage, and ninth in wins. Skon is Liberty’s second Southeast Region Player of the year, joining former forward Devon Docksteader (2017).
This week, the Flames found out the opponents in their Pool A at nationals. They will be grouped with Iowa, the No. 4 team out of the Central which they will meet on Friday, March 17, at 8:15 p.m.; Utah State, the No. 3-ranked team out of the West Region which they will play Saturday, March 18 at 5:15 p.m.; and Northeastern, the No. 2-ranked team out of the Northeast Region which they will face Sunday, March 19, at 8:15 p.m.
The other three pools include the following teams: Pool B — UMass, the No. 1 team out of the Northeast Region, FGCU, the No. 2 team out of the Southeast, Concordia, and Dakota College; Pool C: two-time defending ACHA DII national champion Mary, the No. 1 team in the West Region, St. Thomas, Kentucky, and Bentley; and Pool D: Lindenwood, the No. 1 team in the Central Region, Montana State, New Hampshire, and Indiana.
The top team out of each pool will advance to the March 20-21 Frozen Four. All games will be played in the New England Skate Center and streamed live by Hockey TV.
