Heading into this weekend's home-and-home showdown with Southeast Region rival North Carolina State, Liberty University's ACHA Division II men's hockey team improved to 11-2-2 by sweeping the University of Cincinnati, 5-1 on Saturday and 7-1 on Sunday at the LaHaye Ice Center.
The Flames dominated the Bearcats (4-9) in shots by a 52-17 margin in the opener and 44-20 count in the rematch with sophomore Lane Skon (16 saves) and senior Stephen Sanders (19 saves) both allowing just one goal.
Freshman forward Richard Indermill started the scoring with a putback of a shot by sophomore forward Joshua Sherwood with 2:24 left in the first period. Freshman center Josh Martin netted a shorthanded goal off an assist from graduate forward Josh Malin with 12:32 to play in the second period before Cincinnati capitalized on a power play goal at the 4:05 mark. Just 24 seconds later, junior left wing Trevor Granzow padded Liberty's lead to 3-1 off an assist from sophomore right wing Luke Tucker. Then in the third, Indermill assisted sophomore right wing David Hauke and junior defenseman Daniel Hauke on back-to-back-goals just under five and 10 minutes in, capping the scoring.
In the rematch, freshman forward Mark Padgett scored unassisted to account for the lone goal in the first period before the Flames erupted for five goals in the second, the last two by graduate defenseman Alex Norwinski on the power play. Norwinski assisted the first of the frame, scored by sophomore forward Jared Matley just 47 seconds after the opening faceoff. Padged then finished feeds from junior forward Roman Lamoureux and sophomore Rece Poulin at the 15:00 mark before junior forward Cooper Neal put away passes from Indermill and freshman defenseman Logan Starkey with Liberty on the penalty kill with 5:55 to go.
Finally in the third, sophomore forward and head captain Josh Harrell answered a shorthanded goal by Cincinnati by capitalizing on a power play moments later, assisted by Granzow.
Liberty will host NC State on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the LIC before traveling to Raleigh, N.C., for Saturday's rematch at 8:55 p.m. at PNC Arena, home of the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes. The Icepack, who lost to Liberty's DI men's team in its season opener, have struggled this season and are currently 5-6-1.
