The sounds of skates shaving the ice, pucks and bodies clanging and clashing against the boards, and coaches and players shouting from along the bench and out on the rink will soon be resonating around the LaHaye Ice Center (LIC) again as Liberty University's ACHA Division I, II, and III men's hockey teams hold tryouts for the upcoming 2021-22 season.
Following an informational meeting on Friday, Aug. 20, at 9:30 a.m. in the LIC's large conference room, on-ice sessions will start on Sunday, Aug. 22 and continue through Thursday, Aug. 26 with times to be announced. Tryouts, open to residential students ages 18-28, cost $25. All prospective players must register online by Aug. 15.
"We are gearing up for tryouts, with all of our new guys starting to roll in here over the weekend," Flames' DI Head Coach Kirk Handy said. "It is a very large class, and we are super excited to see all of the guys come in and get ready for the school year. We really like the character, work ethic, and skill reflected in our incoming freshman class."
Handy said in addition to the eight incoming recruits, including one transfer, he will be looking to add a couple more players to the DI roster by the time it is finalized on Aug. 26.
"We'll have some potential new recruits out there," he said. "The better quality guys we bring in every year motivates us to keep building the program. We've had some solid summer camps and a really solid Prospect Camp in May. All three teams will be in really good shape this fall."
Second-year DIII men's hockey Head Coach Josh Graham believes this year's tryouts will be the deepest pool of prospects for his team in program history.
"Having a good idea of who's coming in for tryouts … I'm really excited for what's going to happen in August," Graham said. "We've got a really big group of guys coming in, so knowing the caliber of players we're going to have really excites me about the quality of team that we're going to have. There's going to be a lot of quality hockey players that are going to help build our roster this year. It's really going to push our guys that were on the team last year, and it's also going to push the guys that are coming in."
