
Alexander, DeFriese second in first flight at CDG nationals

Liberty University's men's C tandem of senior Matthew Alexander and sophomore James DeFriese finished runner-up in the first flight division of last week's College Disc Golf National Championships at the North Cove Disc Golf Club, a recently converted golf course in Marion, N.C.
The Flames fired a four-round doubles total of 43-under-par 192, just two shots off the winning score posted by Cincinnati's Calvin Caldwell and Ian Short (45-under 190) in a field of 42 teams.
Liberty's championship flight tandem of sophomores Justin Rosak and Stephen Curry combined to tie for sixth overall out of 36 entries at 41-under 194.

Rosak and Curry tied with pairs from North Carolina State and Texas Tech and trailed only duos from Georgia and Missouri State's B team (tied for first at 44-under 191), Texas A&M (third, 43-under 192), Missouri State's A squad and Michigan (tied for fourth, 42-under 193).
The Flames' B team of junior Spencer Ellingson and senior Isaac Frazier tied with Kansas State's B squad and North Carolina State's C tandem for 11th at 199.
Liberty also entered six men's duos in the 35-tandem second flight, where Cameron Guidry and Clay Moore combined to finish third with a 32-under total of 193, behind only two pairs from NC State. Flames sophomore Carson Cole and freshman Noah Bailey finished tied for fifth with teams from Clemson and NC State with a total of 205 followed closely by senior Axel Routh and junior Andrew Sherwood (tied for eighth, 206).
Individually, Curry tied for ninth out of 72 players in the championship flight with his two-round total of 10-under 78. Frazier and Ellingson tied for 19th at 8-under 80 and Rosak barely missed the finals cut with his first-round 3-under 52, finishing 31st.

In the one-round men's first flight competition, DeFriese (third, 7-under 48) and Alexander (tied for fifth, 5-under 50) placed in the top five out of 84 entries. Guidry won the single-round second flight with a round of 7-under 48 with freshman Logan Wise (tied for seventh, 2-under 53), Routh (10th, 1-under 54), Cole and Sherwood (tied for 19th, 3-over 58) also placing in the top 20 out of 70 competitors.
Hannah Miller placed seventh for the Lady Flames in the women's competition, teaming up with Emily Craig from Missouri Science and Technology, based on their respective singles scores of 269 and 290. Miller also placed seventh individually with her two-round total of 104.
